Possible causes and solutions:

  1. USB Port or Keyboard Issue:

    • Try using a different USB port (preferably USB 2.0 if available).
    • Test the keyboard on another computer to ensure it is working.
  2. BIOS/UEFI Settings:

    • Enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (by pressing the appropriate key during boot, e.g., F2, Del, Esc) and check:
      • Ensure that the USB Legacy Support or USB Keyboard Support is enabled.
      • Also, check for any settings related to USB devices and make sure they are enabled.
  3. Installation Media Issue:

    • The installation media might be corrupted. Try recreating the bootable USB with the Red Hat 8.10 ISO and verify the checksum of the ISO.
  4. Driver Issue:

    • During the initial boot of the installation media, you can try adding kernel parameters to force the use of basic drivers.
      • At the boot menu (where you select to install or verify media), press the Tab key to edit the boot options.
      • Append the following parameters to the kernel command line: nomodeset and usbcore.autosuspend=-1. Also, try i8042.nopnp=1 i8042.dumbkbd=1 to force basic keyboard support.
      • Example: vmlinuz ... quiet nomodeset usbcore.autosuspend=-1 i8042.nopnp=1 i8042.dumbkbd=1
  5. Try Different Keyboard Layout:

    • If the keyboard is partially working (some keys work, others don't), it might be a layout issue. During installation, you can try selecting a different keyboard layout.
  6. Use a PS/2 Keyboard:

    • If available, try using an old PS/2 keyboard (if your system has a PS/2 port) as it does not require additional drivers.
  7. Virtual Console:

    • Sometimes, the issue might be with the graphical installer. You can switch to a text-based console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 (or F3, F4) and then switch back to the main installer with Ctrl+Alt+F1 or F6 (depending on the system). This might reinitialize the keyboard.
  8. Update Firmware:

    • Check if there are any firmware updates (BIOS/UEFI) for your system.
