Linux DSU latest iDRAC upgrade loop for the last month on at least all of my R640, R6515 and R6615 servers

There is something wrong with the DSU processing of iDRAC updates it seems for at least R640, R6515 and R6615servers since early last month:

Linux/RHEL 9.3 all updates

DELL System Update 2.0.2.3

For all systems, running:

dsu --non-interactive

dsu --preview --non-interactive

claims that iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_* is an update for the already installed identical version.

Even running the iDRAC*.bin linux install will not stop dsu from wanting to update the already installed version.

Neither a reboot of the server or reboot of the iDRAC provided positive results.

Yes, I've run "dsu --inventory".

Anyone else see this behavior or know of a solution?

This is happening for the following iDRAC versions:

iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_HV310_LN64_7.10.30.00_A00 (R6615)

iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_HV310_LN64_7.10.30.00_A00 (R6515)

iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_TNYR2_LN64_7.00.00.171_A00 (R640)

(Should I be surprised that the R6615 and R6515 are indentical?)

Regards

PJ

Example dsu --inventory info for iDRAC:

...

15. FRMW, iDRAC  ( Version : 7.10.30.00 )
19. APAC, Dell iDRAC Service Module Embedded Package v5.2.0.0, A00  ( Version : 5.2.0.0 )

...

followed by dsu wanting to update that same version:

dsu --preview --non-interactive
DELL System Update 2.0.2.3
Copyright (C) 2014 -- 2023 DELL Proprietary.
Verifying catalog installation ...
Installing catalog from repository ...
Fetching dsucatalog ...
Reading the catalog ...
Verifying inventory collector installation
Getting System Inventory ...
Determining Applicable Updates ...
------------------ Update Preview -----------------
# : Type : Component : Version : Filename
---------------------------------------------------
1 : Firmware : iDRAC : 7.10.30.00 : iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_HV310_LN64_7.10.30.00_A00
NOTE: The preview option displays the components which can be updated based on Catalog. This option does not update.
Run --inventory for checking the component status post DSU commit to check what has been installed.

Hello,

I'll have to do some research.

Can you make sure Collect System Inventory on Restart (CSIOR) is enabled?

CSIOR

-boot to F2 -> System Setup -> iDRAC Settings -> Lifecycle Controller to check status

-Choose: Lifecycle Controller set to Enabled

-Collect System Inventory on Restart set to Enabled.

-Cancel Lifecycle Controller Actions set to Yes.

R6615 and R6515 should be the same as they are both AMD.

Thank you for the reply.

However, dsu still wants to (re)apply an identical version.

after the suggestions:

Lifecycle Controller was already set to Enabled

Collect System Inventory on Restart was already set to Enabled

Cancel Lifecycle Controller Actions was modified to Yes

rebooted

"dsu --inventory" reports iDRAC related components (on an R6515) as:

13. FRMW, iDRAC  ( Version : 7.10.30.00 )
17. APAC, Dell iDRAC Service Module Embedded Package v5.2.0.0, A00  ( Version : 5.2.0.0 )

"dsu --preview --non-interactive" reports it wants to update to the same version:

Thank you for confirming CSIOR is enabled.

I want to confirm this is the scenario:

You are on RHEL 9.3, using DELL System Update 2.0.2.3

Your R6615 and R6515 have iDRAC v.7.10.30.00 (current version)

Your R640 has v.7.00.00.171 (current version)

And the DSU wants to update to the same version that is installed instead of ignoring?

@DELL-Charles R

Your outline is correct.

Thank you for confirming.

I see you have reboot the server. Can you try a flea power drain?

drain flea power (shut down, disconnect power cables and Network cables, hold in power button 20 seconds with cords removed). After flea power drain, system has to set for 3 minutes for DRAC to reset without any power plugged in, then plug in NIC and power but wait 2 minutes before power on to give DRAC time to initialize.

I will send you a private message. I would like to get a SupportAssist collection from the R640. I'll send directions how to collect the report and how to upload.

@DELL-Charles R I will be able to flea power on Monday when I'm back in the office.

I will post the SupportAssist collection for one of the R640's shortly as requested.

Flea power process completed.

However, this process did not produce positive results. dsu is still trying to update the already installed version:

dsu --inventory

...

13. FRMW, iDRAC  ( Version : 7.00.00.171 )
18. APAC, Dell iDRAC Service Module Embedded Package v5.2.0.0, A00  ( Version : 5.2.0.0 )

Thank you.

There may be a delay in my responses... this forum does not actually seem to be able to send me notifications of new messages (not in SPAM etc) for some reason.

Hello, Have you tried running DSU but don’t use non-interactive?

Is the result the same?

I haven't seen Current Version : 0.00.00.00.

That may be the reason it keeps recommending to update to the current version.

It will give me something to look in to and follow up with you.

Did you already do a flea power drain?

drain flea power (shut down, disconnect power cables and Network cables, hold in power button 20 seconds with cords removed). After flea power drain, system has to set for 3 minutes for DRAC to reset without any power plugged in, then plug in NIC and power but wait 2 minutes before power on to give DRAC time to initialize.

Yes, one of the R640 server did have the whole flea power process done with no positive results.

I've had to change to a different R640 as that server was being sent to another location.
