Need to change the SNMP sommunity string for IT Assistant. HELP!
Let me try this again.
Anyone have any suggestions?
IT Assistant is up and running and working fine. I have one management station and approx 100 Windows 2000 Dell Servers reporting back. All is working fine..so of course now, I need to make a change.
I would like to change the SNMP community names from the default of public to that of something more secure. For the purposes of this post I will use Example1 and Example2 as the new strings.
Here are the steps I’ve followed so far to no avail:
1. Change SNMP string on client to Example1 and Example2. Example1 is used for Read_Only and Example2 is used for Read_Write. This is done under the SNMP services on the client. After adding the new SNMP strings and setting the corresponding security I remove the old default public string.
2. I also change the SNMP sting on the master to match that of the client with corresponding security. I do not remove the public string as I still need to support servers that have not yet had there SNMP string changed.
3. Restart SNMP services on client. Restart IT Assist services.
At this point the clients report to master just fine. Link up and startup messages report to master just as expected. However when I click on the client now I recive the following error:
“The selected system does not have instrumentation that is recognized by Dell Open mange IT Assistant. System is not instrumented.”
As soon as I reverse the above steps, everything works fine. However it’s required that I change the SNMP string to something more secure.
Does IT Assistant need to be installed with the correct SNMP communities already in place? Is there a config file or something else that needs to be modified on the IT Assist machine??

Have you also changed the community strings in IT-Assistant?
You have to do this under Options -> Discovery Cycle to set the standard for new Discovery ranges you may create.
You also have to correct the community string on existing Discovery ranges under Options -> Set Discovery Ranges.
If you are monitoring servers with your old and new SNMP community string inside the same Discovery range, the ones with the community string that do not match that of the IT-Assistant will appear as "Not instrumented". You can create additional discovery ranges with different community strings. However I do not know what happens if tyou create overlapping Discovery ranges with different SNMP community strings. But you can easily test this.
