R320 iDRAC 7 Upgrade Path

Hi everyone! I recently had to replace the motherboard on an R320 after iDRAC got bricked during firmware updates. I know this question has definitely been asked before, but in order to not repeat that mistake again, I was wondering what the recommended upgrade path would be for the following firmware versions:

  • BIOS - 1.5.2
  • iDRAC/Lifecycle Controller - 2.41.40.40

Anyone direction on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Bootsie123.

A rule to live by with updating is that you never want to jump more than 2 or 3 updates, and never miss anything marked Urgent, also it looks like based on your posting, to always walk the iDrac and Bios up together as any large gaps between them can cause them to fail to communicate with each other.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi,

Here you can find update methods for PowerEdge servers:

Updating Firmware and Drivers on Dell EMC PowerEdge Servers

https://dell.to/3XASjme...

Typically with regular maintenance you can go to the support page for the server and apply latest update for the component you need updated.  Dell Update Package (DUP)

If you're asking about the step up process, that could be needed if the server is very far behind current firmware.

In that case you may need to use the DUP method, take one update, for BIOS and iDRAC,  from each year, starting from the oldest to newest and work your way to current firmware version.

Thanks for your response! Using the method of stepping up the firmware version based off of the one from each year, would the following path be fine?

As I said before, I just want to double and triple check because last time I tried somewhat stepping the firmware versions up I ended up bricking iDRAC. Thanks!

Got it! That was helpful. I'll add BIOS 2.5.1 before 2.6.0 and let you know how it goes. Thank you!

Couldn't edit my previous response, but mission accomplished! Thanks again for the help
