R410 - Upgrade firmware using USC
Hi,
I attempted today to update a R410 server using "Platform upgrade" in the Unified Server Configuration utility.
After having configured network, and selected an FTP upgrade using ftp.dell.com, the utility came up with a bunch of upgrades, but the recent update of BMC firmware making the #4 FAN quieter didn't show up. In the same way, selected version of iDRAC6 firmware was 1.30 whereas the 1.41 is out.
Both those updates show up when searching for updates on the website using the server service tag.
Any idea of what i am doing wrong ?

is this still a problem? I know that dell uses a catalog file (internally) that tells the USC what files it can use to do firmware updates. There are delays (sometimes) from the time a file gets posted on the web, to the time the catalog file gets updated so that USC can download the file. normally, this delay is not more than 1 week, but it can be 2 weeks sometimes.

and thank you for your answer. I just reattempted this morning and yes, it is still a problem.
I manually installed the iDRAC6 firmware 1.41 and the latest version available shown in usc when I am doing a platform upgrade is still 1.30.
I think some entries are still missing in the catalog file :'(

Is there any date for this fix ? I saw that catalog files were updated on May, 7. But still, there is reference to BMC firmware version 1.33 A03 for PER410 into them.

Hello,
I attempted an upgrade today and it works: some of the components were successfully updating (including bios, diagnostics utility and nic firmware). Catalog files are looking OK, BMC firmware revision 1.33 A03 is listed for R410.
However, the BMC firmware is not listed into the components in 'upgrade platform' utility, and therefore was not upgraded. Can the BMC be upgraded via USC ?
I have a production machine that makes a lot of noise due to fan #4 running at 14k rpm, I would like to be sure being able to update before stopping it.

This is working correctly, since you have an idrac, the bmc is basically not operating and the idrac takes on all the functions of the BMC. Even if you dnloaded and ran the BMC update by itself, it shouldnt run and should tell you that it cant update ( I havnt tested this) . If you were to physically remove the idrac, then the BMC would be seen by USC.

Oh I understand now.
So the BMC is inactive, then it is the idrac that takes care about the fans.
Then will the update of idrac to latest revision will fix the problem with the #4 fan ? I see nothing about that in release note.

The iDRAC is carrying all the BMC fixes. You may not see BMC defects fix list in iDRAC release notes because it is tracked separately by dell internally. You should not see different behavior with BMC and iDRAC.

After the upgrade of the iDRAC, it worked flawlessly. No more fan spinning at 14k rpm :)
