R440 - iDRAC9 - Password Reset - Headless - NO KVM

I have an R440 and the password is not being accepeted by the idrac9.  I am able to connect to the web interface and I have phyiscal access to the server.  Reboots don't matter.  I cannot attach a monitor as I have no monitors that have a vga connection.  So I can't get into bios or anything else without console from the idrac.  I have tried using the managment port which is either disabled or doesn't work and it appears from documenation I would still need log in creds which we don't have.

Is this now a paperweight?  Because I have been unable to find any solution that will allow me to clear the password without logging on to the system.  There is no way to do this as it was set up as exsi and the ip's were static.  We use a different scheme now so none of the os is accessible remotely.

Any way to do this or toss this in the trash?

Thats a easy one... just install the iDRAC tools (for ESXi) and than use "racadmin" when logged into ESXi Shell by using SSH. As ESXi "root" the racadmin will talk directly through the OS with the iDRAC.  You can change the iDRAC Password an any BIOS, iDRAC, STORAGE Settings with the help of "racadm".

  1. Enable SSH within the ESXi Services
  2. Use pscp or upload the iDRAC Tools *.zip into a existing ESXi Datastore with the help of Host Client or vCenter and than   "esxcli software vib install -d /full/path/*.zip". There is no reboot needed.... keep finger crossing than no maintenance mode is needed
  3. Try "racadm set iDRAC.Users.2.Password NewPassword".  The iDRAC root is located hardcoded in Slot2. iDRAC can store up to 16 local users.  Take a look with "racadm get iDRAC.Users.2".

You havent told us which ESXi version your running so i dont paste a download URL.

Joerg
