Storage Manager not appearing ...

Had Dell Open Management installed on a Power Edge 2600, and it worked fine. Over time, upgraded Windows Server 2003 to Service Pack 1. Then Open Manage would not work.

Went to the download site and downloaded and installed the ISO for the new Open Manage (5.whatever) and it worked, but there was no Storage Manager !

Went back to downloads and installed the patch ... still no Storage Manager!

Went into the Forums and searched under Servers/Storage , Power Edge, but found no reference to it. Finally decided to Register in the Forum in order to post a question. Tried to register 3 times (failed once because password did not have an upper case letter, failed second time because username was already being used, finally worked on 3rd try ...what a pain!)

After successfully registering, returned to Forum and noticed a subforum for Sytems Manage (didn't see it the first time)...looked in there and read the post by Dell-James C about using Add/Remove programs to "Modify" Open Manage to include Storage Manager.

Fine, and thanks much to James C, but why was it disabled in the first place?????

When I installed the ISO, it should have seen the PERC and installed Storage Manager automatically!!!

What a pain! ... a lot of time spent for nothing!

WOW --- I bought a used 2600 off of ebay and put Server 2003 on it and found out I couldn't see the Storage menu in OpenManage either. Glad I saw this post at least now I have some clue as to why. Looked through oodles of documentation, NOTHING!

Thanks for leaving the bread crumbs to a clue...

Storage Manager will not install by default when your PERC firmware and driver is out of date.  If you update the firmware and driver then try to install OMSA, the Storage Management subcomponent will install by default.

If you forced Storage Manager to install without doing the updates, you may get some odd behavior since the PERC and Storage Manager may not communicate properly.

When it comes to driver and firmware updates, if it's broke, you probably won't know it until it is too late.  I recommend updating on a test system as an extra precaution, but usually if there is a problem it is easy to backflash a firmware or install the older driver.  Many of the improvements in drivers and firmware are for things that are not immediately obvious but improve the stability of the server.

I kinda figured that was the problem after I installed storage manage it said one of the drivers was out of date. But it's working and my philosophy is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". But I guess in this case it prolly wouldn't hurt to try... Famous last words :smileytongue:
