I suggest using the Dell Update Package, which you can run from a supported OS. There is a windows version and a Linux version that you can download from support.dell.com:
Thats called the RSOD. My suggestion, update the USC firmware first via USC, if that fails, then outside the USC, the rest should go smoothly. Once you get into this state, remove the power for 30 seconds. Then reapply power and wait 1 minute before turing on the system
I think I've ended up resolving this. The situation is basically this; Dell replaced motherboards on 2 servers, one in each of the following groups. The problem was I think just a bad USC image on the Lifecycle Controllers. The motherboard replacement may have been unnecessary, but the new motherboards updated using USC without a problem.
I have a group of newer R710's on which I was able to repair the Lifecycle Controller using the newest version of the repair package (1.4.0) (.usc file). From there, I could use the USC for update the firmware on all components.
I have another group of slightly older R710's, on one of which I was able to repair the Lifecycle Controller only to an older version of the repair package (1.1.0, anything later than that failed to upgrade). Once I got it up to 1.1.0, I could run USC as normal to upgrade all components. I still have three servers to go, so I'll let you know how it goes.
I was wondering if you have any more updates on this?
I seem to be having the same/a similar problem. Some R710 and R610 servers we try to update using the USC also run into the RSOD. I can get the USC upgraded to 1.4.0_03 without issue (using either the repair package or from Linux). I still crashes though...
I was battling the same issue over the last two weeks. Go F10 into USC, platform update, it connects, downloads the catalog, then X64 exception red screen. After two different Dell techs worked for a couple days with firmware upgrades, BIOS resets, etc found that is was the firewall. Turning the firewall off alowed the full catalog to be downloaded, firmware updates to be selected, and applied. This started post a motherboard replacement to address Bus 0 and 3 errors that were stopping the ESX server.

Windows: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?&fileid=421153
Linux: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?&fileid=421154
If neither of those work, you might need to run the repair package.

Can you update the USC firmware via SBUU? I don't see those updates available, I'm using SUU 6.3.0 as my repository.

USC firmware updates don't show up when I try to do a firmware update using SBUU/SUU. What are my options for updating the USC firmware manually?
