Virtual Disk PERC 3/Si Degraded

Hi

Our server, a PE2450, has three 36G drives in one container in RAID 5 on PERC 3/si. One of them failed. I replaced it with another 36G drive and made it dedicated hotspare. All array disks seem OK but the virtual disk is still degraded. When I do Ctrl+A and go through screens, the container displays "Missing member." Need help.

The server is still up and we can access data from. it.

You may need to initialize the new hard drive . On the adaptec controllers, new hard drives have to be initialized first. Now, the safest way to initialize the disk is to power down the server, remove all hard drives except the new one. Enter the ctrl/a bios and initialize the drive. Then power down the server, insert all hard drives , enter the ctrl/a bios and set the new drive as a hot spare.

Its always a good idea to have a good, validated backup before doing anything to the array.

If you made the replaced drive a dedicated hotspare, you dont have a valid raid5 anymore. You have to make that HDD part of the RAID5 again, you can follow the above. You then will need to add a forth drive as a Hot Spare if you want one.
