Dead Dell Venue 8 Pro after a week and 1/2. No response at all

Just a no power look situation.  Screen is completely black, held down power key for 10 seconds several times and does not respond.  Have it plugged in wall.  Can't get on with my service tag.

Did the windows update about a week ago.  Went ok

What should I do?

I have a variant of this issue. From time to time it won't wake up from a sleep state. It will be plugged in and show charging or full, but it is completely unresponsive. I keep pressing the on button over and over again and  after about 5-15 minutes it will wake up. I don't have this issue on my laptop (which also has 8.1) so suspect it's another Dell issue.

I had the same exact problem last week.  Pressing power button did nothing both on battery and plugged in.  The tablet would not wake up.  It's almost like it was busy doing something while sleeping like updates? and eventually drained the battery.

Left it alone and charged it overnight and it powered right up.  The micro usb female slot seems to be firm and makes a good connection with the cable.  Read somewhere that a loose micro usb slot was to blame for not charging the tablet.

Mine did this also a while back but I was able to recover it by pressing the power button for 10 seconds. Its seems that it is related to automatic updating. You may want to call the Dell Support number 1-866-210-5778. Your service tag number is on the small label near the speaker or on the outside of the box.

Good luck with that.

Mine froze while restarting and resetting it didn't help. Seems to freeze in booting back up.

Mine did that too. Apparently it was caused by one of the Microsoft updates. There was an important update that caused some FUBAR things to happen and normally it wouldn't be highlighted by default to install but if you did then this happened. I fixed it by resetting windows and installing updates that where by default highlighted only. Any updates that weren't automatically checked in the important update section where not installed and I've never had that problem since. As for any future WIFI issues you may have....install the new WiFi driver from the dell support site

I got around this problem as follows:

Press and hold volume down button while pressing power button >> Venue 8 boots to BIOS

On BIOS Exit menu select save changes and restart even though you have made no changes

This caused my Venue 8 to reboot into Windows and work normally.  I have never had the problem again (for a week) but don't know why.

Thank you so much. I just got my Dell tablet on Tuesday and today it went dead but after I read what you did I was able to get it back started so again thank you. I just hope that this is not the start of a bad tablet.

It means, all of you didn't update to new windows version after fixing this issue?

I just had the same problem last night.   I didn't have any issue the first week, so I am sure it had to do with one of the windows update.. and I only do the important ones.    I have not installed any new drivers from Dell.. so it was not cause by driver update.

Thanks for the tip on the down vol and power.  I tried holding down the power button for 10 sec and still it won't start.  The down + pwr works right the way. I did the Save and Reset thing and see if this will work.

Okay that didn't work.  I am now trying to install the updated BIOS from Dell to see if that would help.

I updated everything and took out the SD card just in case it was causing the problem.   It is still now working.  It is really strange, it will wake up eventually, but don't know how long it took.   Pressing the power button does nothing.. but wait like 10 min it will lite up.   I used to wake up right the way.  holding it down doesn't do anything either.   The only thing will work is hold down vol down and press power and hold.. then you see the Dell symbol and reboot into bios.

I called dell about my issue. It seemed to freeze on restart and after an hour and 20 minutes on the phone with them, I am sending the tablet back. They sent me a replacement. It did boot up twice while on the phone but froze on an app once and had other errors the other time . it also booted up the next day but froze when I plugged it into the charger.  And last time I attempted to boot it up it continuously said preparing automatic repair. The initial freeze did is-item to occur after the Windows update last week.

I seem to have fixed my problem.  I followed the solution from another forum and uninstalled the following 2 windows updates:

KB2883200

and

KB2887595

And changed Windows Update setting to NOT do auto update.  After that I got the "Windows 8.1 SecureBoot isn't configured correctly" on my desktop, and the fix for that was in one of the rolledup updates under KB2887595, so I went there on my browser and select the KB2902864 update manually to just install that to get rid of the stamp on the desktop.

That seems to have fixed the not waking up problem.   Now the power button works every time!  Good luck!
