Dell Streak Froyo (2.2) Update Frequently Asked Questions

Hi Folks,
I created this FAQ to share updated information and answers to some of the more popular questions we've been getting. Feel free to post any additional questions and/or comments here regarding the Froyo update on the Dell Streak.

Thanks,
Amy

Q. What if I am not a current Streak owner, but I plan to buy from Best Buy or Dell directly in the U.S.? Will Froyo be pre-installed?
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. For those AT&T customers who purchased a Streak from Best Buy prior to the Froyo update, here is a link to download the update if you don’t have it already: http://mobileupdate.dell.com/PackageProductionLocations/Streak_340_14844_31.pkg
Also, Streak with Froyo pre-installed is currently available on www.dell.com in the U.S.

Q. When will the Open Source code for Streak Froyo be available?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Source code is now available at http://opensource.dell.com/releases/streak/ .

Q. What if I buy my Streak in Japan, Korea or Singapore? Will it have Froyo preinstalled?
A. Yes, Streaks purchased in Japan, Korea or Singapore will have Froyo preinstalled.

Q. What if I installed a non-Dell version of Android on my Streak? Will I still get the update?
A. No.  The update will only be deployed to Streak units which have Dell-provided versions of Android.

Q. Where is the link to the Dell Mobile Sync software?
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. On the Dell Support Site, under Drivers and Downloads:

Q. What if I don’t want to use the Dell Stage Interface?
A. You can remove it by holding down your finger on the widget shortcut and choosing the delete option.

Q. Can I run the update, even if I don’t get the official notice, by copying the URL from someone else’s device?
A.  No, the final link to download the 2.2 Froyo update will be non-functional unless the browsing session is initiated via the software update mechanism on the Streak device. This is because the software update application in the device communicates with the OTA update server to authenticate the update session.   The link to the update is dynamically set to download the correct software package based on the device that is connecting to the update server. Please wait for the software update notice to display on the device itself, when your version of the software is ready for the upgrade.  You can continue to check for updates manually by going to Menu->Settings->About device->System Updates which will connect to the update server and correctly check for an update.

Q. Why is UK getting Froyo update before US?
A. Technically, that is not true. I'd like to clarify a rumor that got started Friday because of two tweets from UK customers. They had received an update message in error last Friday. I followed up with the team that deploys the updates and found out a small set of devices may have received a “Software Update is available” notice but when they selected it, they were directed to a webpage that indicated “No software updates available at this time.”  Shortly after I sent out the apology tweets to the two users, I got an update from the deployment team apologizing for the brief glitch. They also noted that the issue was fixed and no further devices would receive notices until the actual update was turned on. This OTA update is rolling out in phases to different groups of customers. Although I can’t share the exact scheduling, I can say that this week folks who were part of the US Beta testing group will be some of the first to receive the update. Then, folks in Europe with unlocked devices will start to receive the update.

Q. Why can't I have the EXACT date when my device will receive the Froyo update?
A. This has been a very controlled release and several factors affect the rollout. There are also many reasons for not sharing specific dates. For one thing, the rollout schedule changes periodically. This allows our deployment team to stop and fix issues they may discover. Other factors include logistics and coordination/approvals from third party providers. Appreciate your feedback and patience while we continue to roll the update out.

Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, I received the OTA Froyo update, but I am getting the redirect error. When will Dell fix this?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Here is the latest Android 2.2 update for the unlocked phones that are currently on Dell version 3.09 or 3.15  that fixes the issue with browser redirect errors:

Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, but have not received the update yet.
UPDATED 12-14-10
A.  Everyone (globally) who purchased an Unlocked version of the Streak should have received an update notice by now. If not, please manually check for your update by either 1. shutting down and rebooting or 2. going to Streak Settings – About Device and selecting System Updates.

GREAT NEWS,

I should wait for my notification for this update.

My question is concerning the parts of the dell streak like the screen or the touch screen (the glass)

Are there any chances to find these parts separately for replacement?

And if not, when will it be available.

Thank you for your time

Best regards

Hi Amy!!

I want first of all to thank you for your work and efforts.

I live in Italy and, through my brother who lives in London, I bought my Dell Streak from Dell UK website, unlocked, and now I'm using it here in Italy where I live.

My Streak: GAUSB1A110700, build 4399.

When do you think I will possibly get an update to Froyo? Will  I get a notification linving here in Italy? Or, better, I should check manually for it?

Thank you in advance for your reply,

Costantino

Hey I just called AT&T and got an unlock code for my phone then I took a none at&t sim and placed it in the phone once done it tells you network locked and put your code in there all done. They will ask for your IMEI number for them to give it to you because each code is special but give them the wrong one and your phone is locked for ever.

@Desmodronic I don't think it will be any different hardware wise it will just have the different baseband signifying that it is a factory unlocked unit rather than a carrier branded unit.

I just called and initiated a return for my Streak I got last week so I can reorder the unlocked Streak once it is available.  That way I don't have to worry about AT&T getting their grubby mits on the software and removing features or adding bloatware.  If you bought it at full price it should have been an unlocked unit anyways.  To bad just getting the unlock codes from AT&T doesn't mean the phone then gets treated as a true unlocked phone.

Dear Amy

I asked you a question on the upgrade of Sreaks in Australia.

It seems mobile update checks version of Streak.  The Australian version is GAUSB1A111800.

Currently, the upgrade webpage says 'there is no update at the moment'.

However, I was wondering we can upgrade streaks in Australia if you enable your dell server to recognize the Australian version "GAUSB1A111800".

Look forward to your comment.

Regards

Ryan

If you think the update to Froyo (2.2.) has been poorly managed, post in thread link to below. If you do nothing, nothing will change.

Ok, what I have now started feeling is - Dell never had plans of releasing the update on 15th Nov for unlocked Dell Streak UK users (followed by the others). They purposely advertised the whole thing, just to create an interest amongst the current users (and new buyers) or at least to make them think that Dell has actually acted upon what they promised - a 2.2 update by the EOY 2010. I think there has been no actual release of update yet - there is no single person in the whole world who has received the update.

I'm not saying they will not do it, but I'm very sure it won't be happening so soon. It's 10:27am, Thursday, 18th Nov, 2010 now in UK (and I'm an unlocked  - direct  - dell streak user) but there is no news of the actual update. I have been checking for the update every now n then, but it seems it would not be happening for a next few days at least. So it really makes me believe I'm a fool that I trusted Dell - that the update was released for us on 15th Nov.

Hence the only thing now remains is - to not think or have hopes about the update at this moment, to not believe Dell henceforth, to not buy a Dell product henceforth.

Amy,

One more wonderful thing to happen with me is - I bought a sim free Dell Streak directly from the Dell UK website, but Dell has not registered by streak's service tag yet, and whenever I call the customer support for something related to my phone, they ask for the service tag, and when provided, say that they cannot find it in their database. This is superb, you just now how to make money, once you have it in your pockets, you don't care about the customer, or providing any sort of service to him. Clap Clap!!! I have not lost hopes that Dell will ever register my product. FYI - I have the Invoice with me, have my customer, order# with me. I was thinking of walking to the consumer court against Dell, but I was still having faded hopes that Dell will do something for me...but now I may...

@harstreak I have the same version as you harstreak and also no update, don't worry though - it would seem that we are not alone. I have scoured the web and couldn't find a single person who has received it as yet (09:50 UK time). This leads me to think there has been some issues with the release as Dell stated that they were reasing it to US Beta units first (which I'm assuming they used as a pilot to ensure that they get it right with the bulk of customers) and then to the UK unlocked units. Also, on the back of all of this I have just discovered this article - make of it what you will folks!!

This is exactly the same situation I am in. The service tag saga is my main concern of Dells incompetence of not getting that right. Bought direct from Dell UK but not recognised on their system therefore no proper support. This could be a reason why we are not getting OTA updates, if they exist as the phone will not be recog nised. Has been a poor show with Dell. I will be voting with my pocket, no more Dell items again
