Dell Venue 8 Pro Touch Sensitivity

Hello,

I bought two Dell Venue 8 Pro two weeks ago. I notice that sometimes when I type on the screen, the touch input get triggered multiple times... After doing some more testing, I realized that the issue was because my finger was close to the screen, but not fully touch or rest on the screen. The device seems to pick up touch input even if a small tip of my finger touch the screen a few milliseconds, which is a bit annoying when typing or browsing. This ends up with characters get hit multiple times randomly, or the browser suddenly zooms out because the device though it was double-click. I never have any issue like this on my smartphones or the surface RT.

I believe this is a firmware issue or a touch sensitivity issue since it happens on both of my devices. I did multiple factory reset and change "Pen and Touch" setting in control panel. But the issue is still exist. Does this happen to anyone else?

its not a 100% but 80-80% functional. there is still the irratic zooming. you still have issues clicking a forum page tab to launch the next page. still get repat touches when standing on folio case. but much better.

I'm rebooting with the update as I type (on another computer, of course).

About to try it...

Huge improvement!  I can now hold down a key, and it won't repeat, just like other brands that I tried.

The only repetition I'm seeing is when I use my stylus (not a Dell), and hit a key too lightly, or drag the stylus  across a key.  Then the clicking sounds like a Geiger counter.  That may be the fault of the stylus (as well as operator error).  I have not tried using the stylus on other brands, so I don't know if I'd get the same results.

It works great when I type with my fingers.  I'm a happy camper now :emotion-1:

I tried new firmware,

Same issue with multiple character with screen protector on. (3M Brand)

I received new Ebay brand screen protector yesterday, so i ran some tests.

First i was making sure I get multiple characters with 3M Brand screen protector after firmware update.

I took out the screen protector, and tested.  As expected, it typed fine without multiple characters.

I put on Ebay brand screen protector, i get multiple characters again.

So, my conclusion/question is... is this device supposed to used without screen protector??

the problem I have is when typing in the folio case sitting up. Logically you dont want to tap hard enough to knock it over, so when you're carful it does the multi typing. if you are firm, it doesn't.

This and the stylus need a adjustment option to fine tune how each user interacts with the device. Now I don't know if it is completely needed once they work out the final kinks, as I have little to no trouble with my iPad...But due to the tech they used, it maybe helpful.

He didn't specify the version number, but he did say it was released today (with the date).  All of us who were waiting for it knew what it was.:emotion-1:

New touch firmware released today (Jan, 03.)- finally, a noticeable improvement! Thanks.

i have not read all the post regarding this issue, and im sorry to say that this is a hardware issue.

First I thought it was the chargers fault or an magnetic issue but that was not it.

If you bend the tablet a little, not so you break it but just a little.

then the screen from the inside will press the touchscreen and makes all your touches act as multiple presses vertical.

It can make it zoom or press anywhere vertically.

Either this is caused by the heat expanding the tablet from the inside or its bent abit.

I have tested this on 2 tablets and its the same issues, 1 brand new and one used.

But I still love it.

Over and out!

Phil, #IworkatDell but not in this group (I'm in services).  OTG refers (I believe) to an "On the go" cable adapter, which is essentially an adapter between the micro usb port and a standard USB port.  This allows you to connect a mouse or other usb peripheral to the device.  In this case, the mouse can control the pointer where your finger cannot due to the problems with the calibration.  I have a V8P, and just ordered one today.  Ship to store at Wal-Mart cost me a total of $6.50.

thanks, it took me a bit to figure it out that day. I ordered one from Amazon myself. But I think I'm returning this thing.

NetFlix app issues:

I watch Netflix while I work. On the Dell, it is very hard to scroll a little back to replay something I missed. when I do get my finger just right on the scroll bar to go back it acts jumpy and it usually goes to a minute or 2 of nothing then loads at a random point. My IPAD has a 10sec "rewind" wish it was selectable in 20, 30 increments, but it does work well. and if I use the scrolll, it may hesitate, but works fine.

Explorer browsing issues:

When I'm in a site it is with a few tries and sometimes simply doesn't want to take a tap on a page tab to respond. And when I want to go back to previous page it reloads it from scratch, so it waits and loads rather than use cache info. These are basic uses of the device. Pathetic really. Its sad how advanced yet how far we are form the basics. You have an entire OS full Windows in palm of your hands, yet can't even do the basic smoothly.

Screen flip/orientation:

While this works much better now, but still has glitchy hangups when switching from another user profile.

It doesnt come up on the My Dell Drivers and Downloads page. Last driver is 12-17-2013 for Light Sensor.

I'm getting a little tired of all this and may just spend a bit extra and get an alternate with proven Touch screen. This so far has been an immature toy that is half baked.

too bad, I have been wanting to love it. Just the low to No response on Dell's part in a statement, or some commitment is something to easily detach myself from the tablet.

I think Dell is too busy with NSA issues lately, they can care less about these side test project level devices they have put out.  I think this looks better than many others, but some others I'm considering actually works very well. A little less portable I admit, but also more expandable.  In a pinch I was able to put this V8 in my jeans front pocket!...For a second just knowing it fits was kinda cool.

So the heat bends the screen and makes it less accurate...that makes sense to me right now!

So is this the consensus?  ....Hardware issue, Likely NO DRIVER FIX POSSIBLE?

Still some daily issues................

Thanks, I do see the new Touch update of 01-02-2014, and installing.  It also SUCKS that if you are letting Dell "analyze" your system, it should report the updates already made as "installed", and display the uninstalled updates as available options. They might also use the sort method by DATE, this way the new updates are on top, this latter is not a issue, but not a bad way.

Just installed the latest Touch update/Urgent, 01-02-2014.

First test on a webpage and already disappointed.
Maybe a list of what was tested to be falty that Synaptec/DELL now sees as fixed would be a great start:

Webpages are still zooming in with just a touch! can someone test different reported issues before they release? This zooming issue was reported here long ago. Who is responsible for this? Why isn't there someone posting here with specific questions to the users and recording the issues found?

I want to ZOOM in WHEN I FIND the area I want to read!
It zooms in itself when I touch the screen to scroll or position. When it zooms in I cant see the left column of the website i'm using to navigate. MANY websites have the tabs on the left, or forums have user names on the left. I can't see where I'm at without seeing this.

Has anyone tried typing in a webpage forum or someplace and then try to go back up in the right sentence and right space to add or edit something? Almost impossible (using the 01-02-2014 touch upgrade). I figure the active stylus was supposed to cover this task?

Same problem here.  Does Dell even monitor these forums?

Because of the touch sensitivity issues, I almost regret purchasing this device... I say almost because I was one of the few that was able to purchase it from Microsoft for $99..

Even after the latest firmware update, I still get double clicking on websites.. I will likely make a post listing my problems with the Dell Venue 8 Pro..
