Unity 400f all flash and Compression
I am new to my current environment and recently went through a 48 hour sev 1 issues in regards to the SP utilization.
During the SP failover event my single SP was unable to handle the load that was spread across 2 processors. During the SP event I saw I/O load around 100,000 steady and spikes up to 150,000 s
Steps I took to lower SP utilization:
I disabled compression across all LUNs.
I have a RecoverPoint Cluster in my environment and my Unity is a RecoverPoint Target and I identified 1 particular LUN was receiving high amount of write I/O. I Discovered RPA was NOT using compression nor deduplication between site replication. I enabled Low compression and checked de-duplication thinking that this would reduce write I/O to the Unity and help lower SP utilization.
Within 16 hours of making these 2 changes the SP was successfully replaced and following the event:
Drive load dropped to 18k-25k steady from its previous 100k-150k. The 100-150k load was present before hardware failure
CPU utilization dropped to 20-30% for both SP's.
My question:
When compression is turned on for a LUN I expect the SP utilization to increase but does it generate I/O as well? I am trying to understand what impact compression has on my Unity system.
I do suspect that enabling compression and Deduplication on my RPA helped. To confirm, I have disabled Dedup and Compression and I am monitoring the results..
Thanks,
Mike
