Oracle in VMWare

Looking for some "best practice" thoughts around Oracle in a VMWare environment. From OS types, to any unique configs that may help with overall performance. It would be running on an EqualLogic/Blade infrastructure with 10gig backend.

Thanks!

Welcome sruiz39 to the Dell TechCenter!

Below is an oldie but good post on Oracle on VMware. The principles still apply today: http://blogs.vmware.com/performance/2007/11/ten-reasons-why.html

I've also asked Todd Muirhead, VMware Perf R&D Staff Engineer, to chime in on this thread. He's an expert on Tier 1 application best practices/performance optimizations on VMware.

We have a list of whitepapers on Oracle on vSphere at http://vmware.com/solutions/partners/alliances/oracle-database-whitepapers.html which is probably the best place to start. The main component that you will want to pay attention to with Oracle on vSphere, is the same as with any database - the storage configuration. EqualLogic with 10G backend should provide a good basis.

I'd be careful with the licensing as well!

Good point. I just wrote a blog arctile that talks about licensing of Oracle on VMware vSphere and has some great links to other resources as well. http://communities.vmware.com/blogs/ToddMuirhead/2010/10/08/top-two-questions-at-vmwares-oracle-open-world-booth

Hope this helps - Todd
