Rules per server within vFoglight

Hi there,

Can anyone confirm how I can check which rules are running against a specific server in vFoglight?  i.e. if I wanted to confirm that a rule was running that checked disk space and alerted at 90% or that a memory check rule was running, how do I do this?  Thanks in advance - Davie

Hi Davie,

In general, if your looking for a way to check what rules are running for vFoglight, you can drill down by specific cart type.

For example, if Virtual-VMware.

Go to Dashboards -> Expand -> Administration -> Rules & notifications -> Rule Management.

Select Virtual-VMware for Cartridge box.

This will list all the rules by the cart.

By default all rules are enabled.

If you want to drill down into the details of a specific rule.

Click the rule -> Select View & Edit (on the small pop-up window) -> Click Rule Editor.

Thanks,

Rachel

Thanks Rachel...so, as i've just installed vFoglight and have the virtual-VMWare cartidge running, that means that all the VM's monitored will have all those enabled rules in that cartidge applied by default? I can then disable any rule I wish, which is great, however how do I disable a specific rule within any cartidge for only 1 or 2 agents and similarly, how do I amend a threshold for a single server (say disk threshold) without affecting all the other servers in that group?  Could I, say, copy some of the rules amend the thresholds, rename them and set up a seperate group of servers to apply those new rules to?  I am just gatting started and want to be sure that how I apporach the rules initially is the best practice and also involves the least managament.

Thanks

Davie

Perhaps you can try it the other way around by disabling the monitoring for specific servers with configured "Blackouts" instead of disabling the alarm itself.

Have a look at:

Hi Davie,

Yes, all the rules are enabled by default.

Please have a look at the solution Florain has suggested.

https://support.quest.com/Search/SolutionDetail.aspx?id=SOL77850&category=Solutions&SKB=1&product=vFoglight
You can use blackout, instead of disabling the rule.

Also, please take a copy of the rule to do any modifications.

Have look at below edocs on all the rules with VMware cartridge:
http://edocs.quest.com/vfoglight/661/doc/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/frameset.htm?href=Cartridge/vHyperVCartridge/index.php
Click on the above link -> Managing Virtualized Environments -> Reference -> Rules.

If you need any online documentaion help in regards to vFoglight:
Go to http://edocs.quest.com/
Expand vFoglight & choose your product version.

Thanks,
Rachel

There a nice script that generates a report showing all the rules that apply to each host described in the thread Host to Agent to Rule Report

For an image (VM) or ESX Host, you'd need to replace

def host = obj["monitoredHost"]

with

def host = obj["host"]

You can run the script interactively from the Foglight UI in the Script Console/Editor under Administration/Tooling.

You can also run scripts like this from the command line. For examples, see Foglight Reporting using Metric Queries or Groovy.
