Please print these instructions so you can refer to them if you need to.

McAfee interferes with many of our tools. We'll need to disable McAfee until this is cleaned up..

  • Please open McAfee Security Centre
  • Under Common Tasks click on Home
  • Click Computer Files
  • Click Configure
  • Make sure the following are disabled by ticking the "Off" button.
  • Virus protection
    Spyware protection
    System Guards Protection
Script Scanning Protection (you may have to scroll down to see it)
  • Next, select never for "When to re-enable real time scanning"
  • and click OK.

Further info on disabling and re-enabling McAfee: http://help.aol.com/help/microsites/microsite.do?cmd=displayKCPopup&docType=kc&externalID=222820

If that does not work, please uninstall McAfee. (If you have the CD's, or use McAfee Support,  you can re-install it once we have verified that the computer is clean.)

Download OTL to your Desktop

  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following  text between the dotted lines (Do not copy the dotted lines.)
  • Do not change any of the text, even though you think that you already removed some of the files/registry entries.

  • ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, it won't take long.
    • Update your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware via the program's Update Tab.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Reboot your PC and see if the infection is gone.

The infection should hopefully be removed after these steps. Let me know how the machine is running and if you had any problems. You can enable McAfee. We'll disable it again if we need to do more scanning.

Quick clarification needed on the OTL part of things.  When I double click OTL to run it, I'm just a little unclear on what I'm doing from there.  I open it, click "Run Scan", then what?  Do I tell it to "Clean Up" or "Run Fix" before pasting the text?  Or do I just run the scan, then paste the text, then click "Run Fix"?  I just don't want to do it wrong.

Thanks

Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Let me see if this helps to clarify:

After you have downloaded OTL, doubleclick on the icon to open the program. At the bottom of the console that opens, you will see a white box for text at the bottom. Copy/paste the text into that box. After you have the text pasted in there, click on the Run Fix button.

All finished.  MBAM didn't find anything, so there was nothing to clean.  CPU still running at 100% in the task manager.  Here is the hijack this logfile right now:

Let's see if we can find anything else living in there.

McAfee NEEDS to be disabled again per instructions for this, or we will have problems.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of its process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log for further review.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.

4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.

5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

* Additional information on A/V control HERE. * ComboFix is not intended for use with servers.

All finished.  Here is the Hijackthis logfile, followed by the ComboFix logfile.  I put a couple spaces in between them so they're easier to separate.

Please run Hijackthis and place a checkmark next to the following:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked". Close Hijackthis.

Please run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile: Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup" Please make sure only the following are checked:

-- Downloaded Program Files

-- Temporary Internet Files

-- Recycle Bin

-- Temporary Files

Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

REBOOT.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. It is possible that you may be running Java code in your applications that absolutely require a specific version of the JRE to run. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE) .
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • NOTE: As always during installations, beware of any pre-checked option to install a toolbar. If you do not want it, UNcheck it.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.

To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

* Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Java-->Advanced-->Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.

* Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Let me know how things are running at that point. If things seem to be better we will clean up our tools and flush System Restore. After that you should be good to go.

Completed.

The machine is certainly faster than when we began.  The CPU chart runs up to 100% on the task manager only when I'm changing websites or when are graphic or video starts moving on the screen.  After it stops moving, the CPU returns to the 6% to 44% range, which I guess is normal.  I've never watched it regularly before.

One item that's new is during the rebooting process a window pops open that has folder title "Search".  The window contains a yellow folder called "uninst_iess.exe" & also an icon with a picture of gears on it that says "YSearchSuggest.dll".  I don't know what that's about, so I just left it alone.

Here's my latest hijack this log file:

That appears to be related to your Yahoo Search Add-On:
Yahoo! IE Suggest - {5A263CF7-56A6-4D68-A8CF-345BE45BC911} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Search\YSearchSuggest.dll

You can go ahead and delete SysRestorePoint from your Desktop. I don't think we'll need that, now taht things are cleaner.

Open a command prompt:
Click start >run > type cmd and hit Enter
Into the command window type the following command:  Then hit Enter.

sc delete LiveUpdate

Then reboot.

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Yahoo! IE Suggest - {5A263CF7-56A6-4D68-A8CF-345BE45BC911} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Search\YSearchSuggest.dll

Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked". Close HijackThis.
Reboot.

Please launch Hijackthis again.

At the Main window select "Open the misc tool section"
      Then select "Open uninstall manager"
Then "save list" and save it to your desktop.

Copy and paste that list as a reply to this thread. Thanks.

Done.  Here's the list.  That "Search" window is still popping up, but it doesn't have the YSearchSuggest.dll file in there anymore.  Now it's just the uninst_iess.exe folder.  Just an FYI.   Also, on the list below, that 6th entry that says "Adware & Spyware" is an entry I've tried to get rid of for years.  If you click uninstall, it just automatically redirects to a website selling antivirus stuff.  I quit trying to get rid of it years ago,  Again, just another FYI.

How do you feel about removing these? If you don't use Yahoo Search as an add-on, you won't get that error.
Yahoo! Browser Services
Yahoo! IE Search Suggest
Yahoo! Search Protection

You still have all these listed:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Java(TM) 6 Update 18
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Did you delete the old versions before updating? Try again to delete all EXCEPT Java(TM) 6 Update 18.
Reboot when done.

Have you tried to manually delete the AdWare & SpyWare Folder?
If the folder still exists, boot into Safemode and delte it.
You might also try Revo on that Adware Program:
http://www.revouninstaller.com/

You have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.
Because Viewpoint's software will track your web surfing and tailor advertisements based on the web pages you are visiting, I suggest you remove the program.
** Note: Removing Viewpoint Media Player may cause the program that bundled it to not function as intended. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
If you wish to remove Viewpoint, end process on ViewManager in Task Manager.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
  • Viewpoint Experience Technology

Then remove the Viewpoint folder in your Program Files.

Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile: Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup" Please make sure only the following are checked:

-- Downloaded Program Files

-- Temporary Internet Files

-- Recycle Bin

-- Temporary Files

Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Finally let me know how things are running. If things are looking good, we'll remove ComboFix and OTL.

I'm open to deleting anything that you recommend.  I've made quite a mess of things over the years on this machine & I'm greatly appreciative of your assistance thus far.  Could I please get specific instructions on how to effectively remove these items that you've listed?  The reason I ask is because I've deleted, or removed, various programs over the years, only to see little bits of them left over during this cleaning that we've been doing.  I just want to make sure I get it totally right.  Here are the items I need instructions on:

Yahoo! Browser Services
Yahoo! IE Search Suggest
Yahoo! Search Protection

You still have all these listed:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Java(TM) 6 Update 18
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

As for the Adware/Spyware thing on my add/delete programs list, I've never been able to actually locate a physical file on the C: drive for it.  I don't know who to get rid of it.

Thanks

Did you try Revo Uninstaller on the Adware/Spyware that is listed in Add/Remove?

You can use it on these as well if you do not want that Yahoo stuff:

Yahoo! Browser Services
Yahoo! IE Search Suggest
Yahoo! Search Protection

As far as the Java:

  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove those items that I highlighted in red.
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update11

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

    Java(TM) 6 Update 2

    Java(TM) 6 Update 3

    Java(TM) 6 Update 5

    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each of the Java versions.
    Close Add/Remove.
  • Next:
    * In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java =this folder. Delete any subfolders for the Java versions that you just removed.
    * Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\JavaVM =this folder, if found!

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • That will leave you with only the most recent version that includes Update 18. :emotion-1:

Thanks.  All instructions are completed.  I just ran Revo on the adware/spyware thing.  I've currently got a report up that lists "leftover registry items" that it wants me to carefully verify before deleting.  I've not done anything yet from there.  WIth good reason, I'm a bit timid in the registry now.  Anyway, when Revo ran, it did auto-launch the webpage that the adware/spyware is related to.  It's something called Adwareremovergold.com.  McAfee tagged it as a "dont go there" site & it's located in the netherlands.  Lots of bad stuff reported on it.  I just want it gone!  Please advise on how to proceed.

Thanks
