When clicking on a link on a web page I sometimes get a small (3/4' x 3/4') webpage-like box w/ a red X across it appearing at the cursor along w/ a plunking sound and an odd web page address comes up ; tonight I was getting
www.weather.com, previously I would get
www.about:blank.com and several weeks ago I got
www.buy.com: each was an otherwise blank page. When seeking Dell tech support, entering my service tag # and clicking on 'submit' button the same thing happens so there is NO help available there.

MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16414)
Not seeing much in your log. Nothing spyware/malware related. Let's do a little cleaning and look a little deeper.
One question, you have some entries for "Easy Internet" are they there by choice?
1. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following entries
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file) O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file) O16 - DPF: {76D90D08-EAB7-46D8-BF99-87445BF59E72} (SystemInfo Class) - http://www.getdway.com/dwayready/dpcsysinfo.
Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select "
Fix checked"
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. Under Main choose: Select All Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All Click the Empty Selected button. NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All Click the Empty Selected button. NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt. Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
This will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. please move them to a different directory first.
3. Run an online virus scan called
Kaspersky from
HERE.
1. Click on " Kaspersky Online Scanner" 2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on " Accept". After reading the contents. 3. Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run. 4. Click on " Next"->>" Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to " extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK. 5. Then click on " My Computer". And the scan will start. 6. Once finished, save a log as ". txt" to the desktop.
Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan
You will have to allow the scan, your Trend Firewall may try to block it
Re "One question . . . " I have no idea what the "Easy Internet" entries are!
1. done
2. done I use the IE 7 browser.
3. 1. When I click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner" I get the typical problem of a plunk sound, the small web page box w/ red X and a new page addressed
http://www.weather.com!!! Thus I can't get this program to work. Should I download the trial program to see if I can get it to work?
Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select "
Fix checked"
Close Hijackthis
2.Next Using Windows Explorer
(Right click on "Start," select "Explore," and you will see the "tree' of file folders in the left side of the window. Click on the "+" next to any folder name to expand its contents)
Locate and Delete the following
folder
C:\PROGRA~1\EZN <<-Which should translate C:\Program files\EZN
Close Windows explorer->>reboot your PC
3. You will have to turn off Your Trend Firewall inoreder for the Kaspersky online to work
Got to step 3 but can't figure out how to turn off firewall! When trying to do the Kasp. Online Scan thing the same problem occurred. EZN folder was found under my ISP's accellator, temp, codescache, for what it is worth.
Go
here and Download
AVG Anti-Spyware (
30 day free trial version) Save it to Your Desktop
Double Click
AVG Anti-Spyware-setup (It will create its own folder)
Once the program starts You will be at the
Status menu
Under "Your computers Security" Click Update now (next to last update) After the update loads Under Automatic updates Uncheck download and install updates automatically(recommended) (you can always select maual updates the next day)

settings tab
Under How to act? Set default action for detected malwareTo Quarantine Under how to scan All boxes should be checked Under Possibly unwanted software All boxes should be checked Under reports Select Automatically generate report after every scan Uncheck Only if threats were found Under what to scan Scan every file should be highlited
Exit AVG(But do not run it yet)
Reboot into Safe Mode
This can be done by Restart your PC, and after it starts, but before you see the Windows Splash screen Begin tapping the F8 key twice a second untill you reach another menu screen (black background with white menu choices) Use your arrow keys and select Safe Mode and then Enter
Run
AVG Anti-Spyware
Click scanner Select Complete system scan
Once the scan finishes
Select Apply all actions (The items found will be quarantined) Click save report as (Another window will open) Save it to your desktop (By default It will be saved in the AVG folder as) C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG anti-spyware 7.5\Reports
Exit AVG
Reboot your PC in
Normal Mode->>Re run Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log.
Double click the report-scan txt. you saved to your desktop It will open in Notepad Copy and paste that report as a reply to this thread
Your reply should include
a fresh Hijackthis log your report_scan.txt log from AVG
You may have to post the results in more than one reply

No, that is just one of the areas that I've encountered the problem. Thus I use it to check to see if the problem is solved. I just went to a site previously encountered where I was looking at Broadway play tickets and particularly wanting to see the seating chart. Happened again. By the way the addresses that pop up when this appears in the "tab" section of my screen while the upper 'address bar' always stays blank. Also, the info that appears apparently comes from a prior web site that I visited some time ago. You can see that I do a good job w/ security on my computer with automatic updates, etc. My scans only show tracking cookies which I routinely dump.
Hummmmmm! Just discovered that when I get 'blocked' by left clicking on a link w/ typical small box w/ red X, if I right click and hit 'Open' w/ left click I can connect via the link.
That may well be about when all of this started - updating Java. It is interesting to note that no technique worked for me this AM to be able to connect with the Dell on-line-tech chat service. So is there a solutiion?

Not seeing much in your log. Nothing spyware/malware related. Let's do a little cleaning and look a little deeper.
One question, you have some entries for "Easy Internet" are they there by choice?
1. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following entries

Close Hijackthis and Reboot your PC
2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
