McAfee vs. Norton Antivirus
I would like some feedback on the pros and cons between McAfee firewall plus and Norton SystemWorks 20004 anti virus products. Thank You, nbptfit

Everyone has their own opinion..
I have Mcafee and have for many years..with little or minor problems that were fixable fast....
I have heard others swear by Norton..
I have never had Norton ..but my neighbor has and had problems downloading after reformating...
if you have to uninstall and reinstall either program you have to make sure you do a clean uninstall by the websites..
To each is own...and I will stick with Mcafee (if it ain't broke don't fix it)
Good Luck,
Dee

Two different products. A which cannot be compared as they do different things. I personally use Norton System Works 2004 to clean things up and keep my computer humming along. I also use Norton Internet Security Pro 2004 to keep my Internet connectivity clean and running smoothly without all the annoyances.
At work I use Mcafee but I prefer Norton - Simply a users preference.

I use McAfee anti-virus and firewall, and am happy with both. Norton and McAfee both have admirers and detractors, and both seem to be about equal when tested-in some tests, Norton edges out McAfee, and vice versa in other tests, so it would seem to be a matter of price and personal preference.

Can we throw in a few more? *;-) AVG, Kasperksy, Panda, TrendMicro, Sophos, F-Secure. Used them all...all are good. Used Norton and Mcafee much longer...In my opinion Mcafee seemed to hit a few bumps along the road since 1998 and my tech department dumped it in 2001 after the Sircam/Magistr massacre on our WAN (7,000 users, 12,000 computers). Went to Symantec and never had a problem since.
Symantec seems to have some good engineers, and they work hard. But so do the rest. I just wonder if the extra R&D available with more income makes Symantec a better product. Anyone can debate that. I've seen them make mistakes before also...years ago they all went on a holiday (tried to submit new virus and their website said they were gone for the day *;-) A new major threat hit the same day. McAfee beat them to new definitions by 12 hours. Hasn't happened lately though.
I keep up with all of them for information...it's best to see what's happening in Europe first thing as the time lag and origin of viruses come predominantly from there. They get a good head start (Panda, F-Secure, and Kaspersksy) and I have a soft spot for the old F-PROT engine that saved my bacon so many times in the early 1990s.

Norton can be very destructive to operating system files on installation and after prolonged use. I have had to reinstall windows on two of my PCs because Norton Antivirus irreversible damaged the windows 2000 and 98SE operating system. I have since swished to McAfee and experienced no problems.
