There's a thread over on the MS forum about this issue, but no fix offered, as of now... It may be the result of a botched update to the MSE scanning engine which was issued on 8-19-17.
If I were a cynic, I would chalk this up as yet another effort by MS to annoy you enough to upgrade to Win 10. I note that Windows Defender for Win 10 (essentially MSE) is updating without any problems for me.
I'm not the only one they've annoyed, yet again. This desktop cannot run anything beyond Win 7, and MS is supposed to support Win 7 until 2020. So I'll upgrade to Win 10 now, IF MS wants to buy me a new desktop to run it on.
Don't know if this is a real fix or just a "feel-good"...
If MSE Definition 1.249.211.0 is already successfully installed but WU offers it again, just hide this update. It seems when that update is (re)installed, the very next update will fail.
After I hid 1.249.211.0, 1.251.182.0 was successfully installed and then 1.251.187.0 got installed.
Don't know about all the others that failed, but I presume updates are cumulative so those may not be needed now that 2 more recent ones got installed...

You mean you're not...?

(FWIW, my laptop is running Win 10.)
