Pop-Up/Connect Problems

Question

I have no idea of what my son has downloaded, but no matter what I do, I cannot get rid of pop-ups; moreover, the internet periodically turns itself off and I cannot re-connect.  I have installed Windows XP SP2, a trial version of McAfee Anti-Spy, and Ad-Adware SE Personal (as recommended by MS) - things are detected & removed, but I still have the problem.  I do not want to randomly go to anti-spy websites downloading stuff I know nothing about - how do I know they are legit??  Is the anti-spy stuff from McAfee or any other reputable company worth the $19.95 or $29.95?  I want to get rid of whatever I have NOW, not stop new infections!!  HELP!!!

Before we do anything can you do a couple things first?
Go to this sight http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm and do an online scan and delete whatever it finds. Be sure to highlight the drives you want to have searched.

After that go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html and download SpyBot and run that and delete what it finds.

Now go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html and download HiJackThis to its own folder that you create on your C:/ drive.
After it is downloaded open the program and click on the Scan and save to log button.
Post the log that it generates right here so that it maybe viewed and analyzed for problems.

The virus scan you suggested in step 1 found a trojan; Spy-bot found 11 items:  1 Doubleclick; 2 Advertising.com; 1 Avenue A Inc; 5 DSO Exploit; 2 Terminexor.  I used the Ad-Aware earlier today, but not since I have been following your directions - should I have done that too?  --V

After you check them, close all windows, especialy broswers and hit the fix button.

Now use Windows Explorer to find and delete if still present:
C:\WINDOWS\ZServ.dll

Reboot and post a new log.

When you go to the www.trendmicro.com page, click on "Free Online Scan", click "Scan Now, It's Free!", then select your location and click "Go".

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Also, check your Add/Remove programs for the following:

SideSearch

...and try to remove(uninstall) it from there.

While your in there, post back anything with 'search' in the entry, along with anything you don't imnmediately recognize.

I haven't done the first part of what you asked, but I did look in Add/Remove Programs and found : "Search assistance - My Search" - is that something installed by MS and is supposed to be there? What is it? --V

Mike - OK...I deleted the items from the list. I also tried to uninstall the "My Search" thing but it didn't work, so I don't think the dictionary exists - it must not be there. I looked in Program Files and didn't see it.

V from CA,   That log looks good to me! Great work!   -   That can sometimes happen when something removes part of a 'problem' either programatically or manually, without trying to first use 'Add/Remove programs' - maybe one of the spyware busting programs removed it - not sure.   How's your system running? Better? Are there any more problems?     If everything is running ok...   Be sure to run 'Disk Cleanup' and allow it to remove everything it finds. I'd also recommend 'flushing' your restore points, by disabling, then re-enabling system restore (with a reboot in-between), then immediately creating a new restore point manually. For that, i'd need to know more about your system, it's settings, your browsing habits, what the system is used for, who has access to it and a whole buch of other stuff - which now that think about might be considered by some, a form of spyware! - :)
