In Clariion, SP reboot should not result in Path dead (if PP is installed and host configuration is correct). Same is with VMAX upgrade, if host has redundant paths and multipathing is configured then there should not be any impact.
There is no need to configure redundant Paths on host during VMAX code upgrade, the reason is first code install on SP (Service Processor) and after that it will be loaded on directors or other components. This is completely online process and directors are not rebooting during it.
I agree with Saurabh. There should be redundant paths. In case customer has 2 HBAs, and zoned and masked to 2 FA ports, it will be a good scenerio, in which even if the whole Bus goes dead, you still have paths from the second HBA that is connected to a different FA port.
