Data erasure and permanent sparing
Hi everyone!
I am interested in the data erasure capability of VMAX. However, while reading the VMAX Product Guide I came up with a question. In page 107 it is said: "Data erasure requires permanent sparing. Data erasure is invoked only upon successful completion of permanent sparing". Why should a process which basically deletes the data securely need permanent sparing?. If I understood well, permanent sparing is a process that replaces a defective drive with a spare drive, so I can't understand what it has to do with the removal of data. Someone can explain it to me please?
Thanks

Hi,
Here they are specifiaclly referring to EMC Certification Data Erasure for Symmetrix Single Drive Erasure.
Under this feature, If a drive fails and is permamnetly spared then data erasure automatically runs on the spare drive when replaced.
