In FTS we connect a storage array to the front end port of a vmax and assign LUNs to the vmax from the other array.
In FLM also do we need to do the same? If I have a dmx, a vmax and a host on the same switched fabric, can I migrate the data non disruptively from dmx to vmax?
Federated Tiered Storage is a technology that allows you to put third party (or other EMC storage) behind the Symmetrix VMAX. This allows the VMAX to leverage the storage of other arrays by directly attaching them to a front end port as well as it's own and implement VMAX functionality (FAST VP, SRDF etc.) with that storage. It can be used as a way to migrate storage onto the VMAX or expand the storage capacity or leverage old arrays for lower tier storage or all of the above. See the technote here:
Federated Live Migration is a technology that the Symmetrix uses to non-disruptively migrate storage volumes from a DMX/VMAX to a VMAX. It is solely used as a mechanism to migrate data build upon Open Replicator. See the technote here:
Federated Tiered Storage (FTS) allows VMAX arrays to use the storage capacity of an external array.
Federated Live Migration (FLM) is array-based migration suit. It together Open Replicator for Symmetrix, with the host-level application redirection, provided PowerPath.

Yeah you need a fabric connection from the DMX to the VMAX and connectivity to both to the host. I actually wrote a blog post about FLM yesterday:

But the technote I linked to above has more detailed requirements.
