Disk CRU with array out of maintenance

I have a VMAX 20K with expiring maintenance. We're not planning to renew the contract, but I would like to use it in my lab.

All data is migrated, we are creating new bin. I have requested to turn CRU on, and to remove number of drives. These will be kept on site, so we can use them as spares. We would like to be able to keep the array healthy and replace failed drives ourselves.

My question is: will the CRU process still work if the array is removed from ESRS and doesn't dial home ?

I saw all goofy videos and I did read everything I could find for the CRU process, including this

Ask the Expert: All about what's new with VMAX in Q2 2013.

hi bhalilov,

Are you able to see the online video of CRU Disk replacement? https://support.emc.com/products/260_Symmetrix-VMAX-VMAX-20K/HowToVideos/

Yes, Bhalilov. It should work. It doesn't have to do anything with ESRS. CRUs come under support options which we select at the time of purchase of the system. They are defined by the Service types you are availing. CRUs will work if they are under Warranty & kind of Service supported & or availed ...regardless of ESRS removal from Array.

You may browse this for more info :

Hope should be helpful...
