Does EMC recommends Adaptive Copy as recommended/best replication topology

On a VMAX 5876 series and with Solution Enabler / SYMCLI 7.4.0.2, does emc recommends Adaptive Copy as best method for replication !?

Why is the default -rdf_mode value is Adaptive while creating/using symrdf createpair command  !?

Some of the doucments indicate that

     Base/First Transfer (Replication) be done via ACP mode then set the srdf mode to sync or async depending on the requirement !

      Incase of broken links/Large data transfers use ACP mode.

Does Adpative Copy add much value when AR ( Automatic Replication )  topology been used/under consideration !?

ACP is best when you are Migrating huge chunks of data between the Symms. Not an ideal solution for replication.

Why is the default -rdf_mode value is Adaptive while creating/using symrdf createpair command  !?

Before 5876, the default mode while creating SRDF pair was Synchronous which was creating some confusion for the customers who have not purchased the SRDF/S licenses. They had to use -rdf_mode async or acp_dsk while creating the srdf pair. Thats why the default mode is changed to ACP in 5876 code.

Regarding your third question, i am not sure if SRDF/AR works with ACP mode? I need to check the docs...

Does this mean we use ACP only during the base transfer ( first time srdf link is established ) and then we should fall back to synch/async ??? !! Please confirm

Does any one have comments or EMC recommended way of replication for SRDF/AR ? Also would that be matter of concern if we use sync or async for replication as snapshot is already availalbe on the BCV device during replication(SRDF/AR)

Hi Srinivasa,

as Saurabh said Adaptive Copy Mode is useful for data center migrations or for migrating large blocks of data from one place to another. When choosing this mode of synchronization, the user should be aware that data is not transferred in a serialized manner. Therefore, Adaptive Copy Mode is not a prime choice for realtime recovery.  In Adaptive Copy Mode, the user specifies that a source volume's primary mode of operation be suspended. Data is transferred from the source volumes to the remote volumes without waiting for an acknowledgment and allows a lag between source and target volume of a specified number of I/Os. This allows SRDF to manage the Adaptive Copy volumes at a lower priority, thus enabling applications using that volume not to encounter propagation delays while data is transferred to the remote site.

SRDF/AR options enables rapid disaster restart over any distance with a two-site single-hop option using SRDF/DM in combination with TimeFinder, or a three-site multi-hop option using a combination of SRDF/S, SRDF/DM and TimeFinder

  Forgot to mention that for the ultimate in distance replication and protection, SRDF/AR can run in synchronous mode from the primary location to a regional secondary location and then ship the data, in adaptive copy mode, to a tertiary location. Thus, a primary site failure will fail over to the secondary location, and in the event of a regional disaster that destroys both the primary and secondary locations, applications can be restarted from the tertiary location.
