Masking views with same Initiators and Storage Groups
Hi,
I would like to ask you if it is possible to have two masking views with same initiators and storage groups ?
The logic is, in my current VMAx I have 2 masking views as follows:
Masking View Name Initiator Group Port Group Storage Group
------------------- ------------------- ------------------- -------------------
service01_MV service01_IG service_PG service01_SG
service02_MV service02_IG service02_PG service02_SG
I want that both MVs have same PG ( I'd like both use service_PG). So I need to change PG in service02_MV.
Since it is not possible to modify an existing MV I was thinking about to create a new MV that will use same IG/SG as service02_MV but PG being service_PG.
This way I could remove service02_MV without any downtime in my systems.
Masking View Name Initiator Group Port Group Storage Group
------------------- ------------------- ------------------- -------------------
service01_MV service01_IG service_PG service01_SG
service02_MV service02_IG service02_PG service02_SG
service02b_MV service02_IG service_PG service02_SG
Do you think this is possible?
thanks

Hi,
Here you are the answer from EMC suppport. The only way to create a MV with new PG but IG and SG already in use will be to delete the existing MV and recreate with new PG.
Unfortunately, you would not be able to do this activity without a downtime. Below are the findings and issues you might experience.
Situation:
Both the port groups “service02_PG ” and “service_PG” has the same ports within it.
All the Masking views has “service_PG” except 2 Masking views which you are planning to change.
Findings:
You cannot create a new masking view with the same SG and PG as “service01_MV and service02_MV” with service_PG because, it would error out saying its already part of a masking view and the host is still seeing it.
You cannot rename “service02_PG” to “service_PG” since its already existing.
Recommendation:
The only option in this situation is to delete the existing masking views with “service02_PG” and re-create the masking views with “service_PG”. However, this process requires a downtime. Please feel free to let me know if you have any issues/questions and I’d be more than happy to assist you.

Although a view can not be modified easily, a port group can be changed easily on the fly. Will change the content of service02_pg to the same content as service_pg work for you? I know, service_pg and service02_pg will be a duplicate finally.

You can think about this also::
Add the ports of service_PG to service02_PG. Assume, you have 2 ports(7G:0 and 8G:0) in service_PG and 2 ports (7h:0 and 8h:0) in service02_PG. Once you add the ports of service_PG to service02_PG. Your storage will be visible from 4 paths. Once that is confirmed, you can later on remove the unwanted two ports from service02_PG without having the downtime.
