New VMAX FAST info
We are implementing our first VMAX 20k arrays. I am familiar with DMX4 without FAST. As I am migrating data from the dmx4s to the VMAX, when a host is close being completely migrated, I add a policy (bronze, silver, gold) to the SG. At that point I can see all the data is in the FBA-FC pool. This is because all the vols were bound to that thin pool.
When I come in the next day I see data in the SG is no spread across my 3 tiers EFD, FC, SATA based on the policy. Is there some reporting or way for me to see what happened behind the scenes. Maybe something that show when and what was migrated to the various tiers etc.
Thanks

Brad,
To see the distribution of capacity across tiers/pools for a particular TDEV, try this command:
symcfg -sid 6445 list -tdev -dev 1b2b -detail -gb
You can also leave out the '-dev 1b2b' and it will show you all TDEVs in the system.
The ingress/egress counters should be visible in the FAST dashboards within the Performance section of Unisphere for VMAX.
Thanks,
- Sean

Unisphere performance views will show those counters
symcfg list -tdevs -detail should show allocations per TDEV. You should also be able to see this in Unisphere.
FAST VP is very different from full volume FAST or Optimizer where a whole device moves to another disk or technology. With that sort of movement, it makes sense to log each move. When we move as little as 768k at a time, it doesn't make sense to log each movement.

Ahhh, nice command. I can see most of the data in FC and some hot data in EFD. Not sure why Pool Allocated GBs is only 167 while Total Written GBs is 200. Seems Pool Total Allocated would be 200GB as well (since that is how much was written). ok, so where do I find these ingress/egress counters? Seems like there would be some kind of reporting or logs with some detailed info.
Here is the symdev info for one of the TDEVs in the SG. Not sure where to find the detailed FAST allocation info.

There are ingress and egress counters for each pool. You can also look at any or all TDEVs for the detailed allocation per device.

There is a very nice graph in Unispere VMAX that will show you how was the storage allocated/moved between the tiers.
Select your VMAX, Performance -> Analyze, select Historical
Double click on Array SID, then select the "Storage Groups" Tab
Double click on the Storage group you need to see, then go to "Virtual Pool Tier" , you will see the tiers that this SG is allocating from.
Cntrl-Select all tiers, the select the "Allocated Pool Capacity" Metrics and draw a graph. You will get something like this:
In my case the volumes were bound to the FC tier FCR1 (yellow) and migrated from another array (using OpenReplicator) . After the migration finished FAST-VP moved the majority of the allocations to SATA Tier SAR6 (blue line) and some went to Flash EFR5 (red line)

Well, my cut and paste did not come out to well but as I look closer at the output it all makes sense. Thanks for the replys.
