Start Reclaim issue

Hi All,

I sancopied 1 Thin LUN ~2.8 TB from VNX to VMAX10k using SAN copy and it's was showing 100% allocated, while LUN was around 10GB Used only. Using Unisphere VMAX, i started "Start REclaim" with full volume option on that ~2.8TB Meta  on VMAX. But once Reclaim completed it was showing "allocated %" as 4623%. and result was very weird. I have latest Enginuity code with latest patches on VMAX.

PFA snapshot.

Any help why it happened? would be appreciated.

Because you are using unisphere vmax . Please do a rediscover and then refresh the gui and check.

Also Reclaim is not an instant fix. What it means is that you will get the prompt back immediately but sometimes it can take upto 12-24 hours to complete the process. As it is a background process. Another Problem is you cannot see how far it has yet to go . EMC can see that after logging into symmwin.

Also if this does not work. Try reclaiming the space from host. If it is a windows host use sdelete . windows 2012 has built in tool to reclaim space.

if its esx use unmap command from esx to reclaim the space. Its way quicker than vmax reclaim and also its more effective . As vmax only reclaims tracks that are zeroed by itself . If for example you run defragment on host or create and delete the file on that volume vmax will never reclaim that space as vmax has removed that track from its own zero table .

Zero table tracking system of vmax only marks it as zero or non zero once. As soon as host writes to the tracks or claims it never written before by host flag is removed by vmax for that track and it will never be reclaimed even if host deletes or formats the volume.

I hope this helps.
