View FAST-VP "future" data movement ?
Is there a way to see what FAST-VP will do once data movement move is set to Automatic. Current configuration is VMAX 20K, enginuity 75, FAST-VP is disabled, Performance Time Windows is enabled, data movement mode is off. I tried to look at "symfast plan" command but it displays "No Data Movement Plan" ..i assume it's because data movement mode is off.
Thank you

Correct. The cournters will only be incremented when FAST VP moves data into or out of a pool.

The symfast list -plan or -history commands only apply to FAST DP (full LUN movement of thick devices) and not to FAST VP. There is no "forecast" command for what FAST VP will do when you do enable it.
As Sean mentions, because FAST VP moves extent groups that are 120 tracks in size, the amount of data to present would be too great to consume. Even if the information was presented, it would be next to impossible for a user to determine if that was the 'right' thing to do.

dynamox,
FASTVP has no equivalent to FASTDP or Optimizer's preview or user approval mode... even after you enable data movement, you won't be able to see what FASTVP plans to do until after it has moved extents. Because FASTVP moves data in such small units, providing a report of which extents FASTVP intends to move would result in a very large amount of information..
Thanks,
- Sean

There is no CLI command that will accurately report how much data has moved within the array. You can look at the utilization levels of the tiers, but once FAST VP has been running for a while this won't provide an accurate picture. For example, if FAST VP moved 10GB from FC to EFD, but also moved 10GB from EFD to FC, the utilization levels of the two tiers would not have changed, but FAST would have moved 20GB.
If you have the Performance component of Unisphere installed, the best metrics to look at to see how much data FAST VP is moving are the pool ingress and egress counters. These will show the avg tracks per second being moved into and out of each pool in the array, being the result of FAST VP movements.
At the DA level, you can also look at VLUN migration reads and writes.

what information can you see after extents have been moved ? If my "data movement" windows is set to 24 hours, will it display extents moved within last 24 hours ? Just trying to see what my options are in terms of reporting how much data was moved between tiers (other then looking at each tier utilization and delta values).

ingress/egress counters are for operations performed by FAST-VP only ?

yeah, i don't want to look at tier utilization. Ingress/Egress tracks are available in SPA as well, would each track be equal to 768kb or 10 * 768kb ?

but i though FAST-VP works at extent level (or 10 consecutive extents at a time) ?

The ingress/egress counters are tracks per sec, so it's 64KB.

FAST VP movement requests are at the extent group level which is 120 tracks, but the ingress and egress counters measure the movement in tracks.

very helpful, so i could take # of ingress values x 64k to get the amount of data that was promoted to that pool ?

sorry I do not mean to hijack this thread
I have got a Vmax 20K which has 3 tiers
EFD FC and Sata
I have want to setup FAST VP to use all 3 tiers
the initial set up was that the array was setup with TDEV on both the sata and FC pools
It only had data devices on the EFD pool
Do I have to create tdevs on the EFD pool inorder to also use the EFD pool ?
