Virtual Lun migration
Hi,
What is configured and unconfigured space used in virtual lun migration? I know that in configured space after migration the primary device will be intact but in case of unconfigured space the primary dev will be deleted once migration is over.
Thanks,
Shailender

Hi,
Unconfigured space is the free space in your symmetrix. A new device will be created by symmetrix from the free space available in your symmetrix and migration will be performed to this target device when you are using the option: migrating to unconfigured space.
However, in case of configured, you can select any other symmetrix device that was created by you as a target of migration.
You can find the detailed explaination in Document available @ http://powerlink.emc.com/km/live1/en_US/Offering_Technical/Technical_Documentation/300-009-147.pdf
Thanks

Hi,
V-LUN Migration uses two types of data movements :migration to configured or migration to unconfigured.
If you are migrating to unconfigured the target device is created from the free pool.
If you are migrating to configured, the target would be a configured symmetrix device which can be selected by the user or automatically selected by symmetrix.
Thanks

Now I got it....in case of configured when we specify the file we provide the source and target devices while in case of unconfigured we just specify the source devices.
Thanks a million Amita.

or in simple words, moving to configured space is swapping the two devices and unconfigured space is moving the device to newly created one in the target pool.
