VMWARE Servers on VMAX and DMX4 Storage Questions

Dears

I want to configure and convert Windows and Linux Servers to VMs , Storage will be taken from VMAX and DMX4

I have the follwoing Questions :

1) for Storage Luns , is it better to give 1 Huge Lun ( 1 TB for Example ) or to give Luns based on Host need depending on each server ? and how to configure that ?

2) For the Thin Provisioning , it should be configured on Luns and from VMWARE to get the best usage of them , right ?

3) If it will have another Storage from other Storage , what is the best

3) Any Recommendations ?

Thanks

and another Question

since VMs are hosted on Symmetrix

we will be checking compatability only between the ESXi and the Storage , not the Host and Storage anymore

is that right ?

1) It depends.  Managing individual luns is going to be a lot of work.  Since you would be using metaluns the difference in performance likely won't be noticed if you have a few VM's on the same lun.  I also wouldn't do huge luns 20+ TB luns as there are still some VMware functions that can only be done one per datastore.  We use 3TB to allow full 2TB vmdk's but that was based off bottlenecks of a mid range Hitachi AMS2500 so when we go to the VMAX we will likely make those a little larger.

2) Performance wise you are better off letting the SAN do the thin provisioning.  If performance isn't a factor you can have VMware do it as well.

3) Not sure what the question is here?

4) Careful if you try to do anything fancy in VMware like automated Storage DRS if you are using FASTVP.  It's not recommended (and I think not supported) to do both.  From who i've talked to at EMC they recommend doing FASTVP and not using VMware's automated storage DRS.

5) From what I understand basically if VMware supports ESXi on a hardware platform then EMC will support it.  So yes checking the ESXi compatability is the big one, but the hosts should also be in the matrix and especially the HBA's.
