Volume identifiers can be used on 10K. Are you getting a specific error when trying to set the volume identifier?

Symmetrix arrays support device identifier management on Enginuity 5773 and higher. it should be working on VMAX10K with 5876.

try command below , if it does not support device identifier, will return message " The requested feature is not supported for this Enginuity or SYMAPI version"

symdev list -identifier device_name

Hi All,

        I had a GUI error yesterday which said "This feature is not supported for this Enginuity or Symapi version", but today when I restarted the SMAS and tried again I was able to set the volume identifiers normally. Thank You Saurabh, Fenglin and SYMCLIGuy for reaching out to me your inputs were helpful.

Regards,

Swaroop Sagar.

You can do it when creating the device, or use the syntax SYMCLIGuy provided if the device is already created.

Also, if you're using Unisphere for VMAX there is a field for the identifier you can specify when creating a device.

You can use the following syntax with the symconfigure command

  set dev [: ]

          [device_name=' ' | NO device_name]

          [[hp_identifier=' ' | NO hp_identifier] |

          [vms_identifier= | NO vms_identifier]];

Just a note on this, when creating the devices in Unisphere you can select the advanced tab and set the device identifier at creation time;

It can also set via the symconfigure command by adding the syntax below to the end of the create command, you can assign a user defined number or append the symdev name

,device_name='ORA_DATA',number=SYMDEV ;

You can set the identifier on any VMAX or DMX array running 73 code or above.  The version of SE above 7.4 will be required to support this.

You can also use the inq -identifier device_name command on your hosts to view from the host side.  If you have provisioned multiple volumes of the same size to a host for different purpose and want to ensure your application teams select the right volume it's a good way to tie together.

The identifier is also listed in the VSI viewer for VMware.
