VSI SV and Symmetrix

Hi Guys,

I was reading the install guide for the VSI Storage Viewer for the Symmetrix.

I am trying to clarify something that is mentioned in the product guide as per below.

Symmetrix arrays can only be discovered in-band; this means that at least one LUN must be accessible for that Symmetrix array.

so am i correct in saying that for every Symmetrix array you have to present a LUN to the solutions enabler server?

    For the most part, yes. Either a gatekeeper (a small Symmetrix management device ~3MB) must be presented over FC or iSCSI to the SYMAPI server or the Symmetrix in question must be connected via RDF to a Symmetrix that does have a device presented to the SYMAPI server and syscalls can be issued over the RDF link.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Can i ask why the solutions enabler server requires this LUN to be presented as compared to the clariion only needs TCP/IP access?

    There is a Primus article that discusses this, but for your convenience here is the answer out of the article:

    The Symmetrix is a high performance storage system that scales up to the largest storage capacities available in the industry. It also has very comprehensive monitoring, performance and diagnostic capabilities. As a result, command dialogs with the system can be extensive and can involve a good deal of data. Symmetrix uses Gatekeepers as a scalable, high-performance means of command and control, suitable to the capabilities of the array. The deterministic nature of disk I/O is particularly powerful when used for array-wide or multi-array operations such as consistent splits, in which conventional networking may encounter packet collisions or retries, which could prevent the timely operation of disaster recovery commands.
