Best configuration for storing 2TB images ?
Hi,
We are going to migrate a number of physical servers to virtualized environment. And we have been using EMC CLARiiON and would like to implement the new system with VNX.
For a particular physical server, it is used for storing lot of images (around 1TB) and forecast to be 2TB in 3 years time.
Since our budget and rack space is limited, those images are preferable to be stored in SATA disks while other servers (running SQL Server / Domain Controller ... etc) will be using FC disks. We just wonder whether both FC and SATA disks can be stored in a single DAE in VNX or we have to purchase 2 different DAEs (Cost + Rack Space) ?
Is there any suggestion for the best way for our implementation?

The VNX uses a SAS backend and thus you can mix SAS and NL-SAS drives in the same DAE.

You can mix sas and sata in one DAE.

Any type drive: SAS, Flash, or NL-SAS may be hosted in a DAE (or DPE) with any other type drive.

You have two choices for large files on VNX (actually three). They are:
If any LUN is greater in capacity than 16TB, you must use Traditional LUNs or MetaLUNs.
For RAID groups created from 2TB and greater capacity NL-SAS drives using RAID 6 is recommended for high availability.
For filesystems with a large block size (>128KB), FAST Cache is not effective.
Two (2) TB of storage is not large by today's standards. Any of the three solutions above will work. A lot will depend on the response time you require. With the large drives available, you can quickly get to your capacity requirement, but the available IOPS may lag. Your response time needs may lead you to using one of the larger SAS model drives instead of NL-SAS.
