Connect one Server to two Storage Groups

Hi !

I know ther already have been some discussions here but they did not help me.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Backup Server which one is connected via FC to our VNX5300 and it is working fine.

Now we had to setup a second Storage Group (because of some reasons).

I'd like to backup LUNs in both Storage Groups with the single Backup Server. Is there a way to give it access to all LUNs which are located in the two different Storage Groups ?

It would be okay for me, if I could divide the four initiatiors into groups with two. So I could create two hosts with two initiators for each. Is that possible ? And how do I have to set this up ?

LUNs can be member of multiple storage groups, so you can add LUNs from multiple storage groups to one system. I am curious what are you trying to backup that you need to present LUNs to your backup server ?

Hi Schaedle2012

The only way I see this possible is if you do it as you say dividing the HBAs up but also dont forget to remove/stop the host agents if you using any.

Good Luck!

Hi Yasien,

do I just have to deregister it or what is the correct doing to get it split ? Sorry for maybe a stupid question it's my first EMC I'm working with since a few months.

HI

Do you use Host agents if so then you need to uninstall that or stop it first, then try to just deregister the HBA's you want to use to connect to the other SG.

Once they have deregistered and refreshed, Manually register the HBAs with a false IP address/hostname but maybe something you would be able to track for future refference.

Then give that config access to your other SG.

Should work...

Let me know.

It would not help me, that a LUN may be a member of multiple Storage Groups. I need to connect a host to multiple Storage Groups.

The backup needs to have access to the LUNs so we can backup the whole machine via VCB from Symantec backup.

create a storage group for your backup host and then add any LUNs you want ..even the ones that are already presented to other hosts.

Hi,

I deregistered now one of the two connections (2 of 4 paths). I rebooted the backup server. When I now have a look into the "Connectivity Status" of the EMC I do not see any free connection. How do I get the connections to register it once again ? Or does it just take more time so that they come up. I waited only aprox 10 Minutes.

I already did a "refresh all" and "Update all hosts".

I also tried to create a new host with the WWN which one I see on the brocade switch. No chance.

When I compare the WWN seen on the switch with that one seen on the host connectivity with a working server, they are different. They are also twice as long as seen on the switch.

yes, VCB software should be installed on the host prior to you presenting any LUNs. It will prevent Windows from trying to "mess" with the LUN yet allow enough access to perform the backup.

since you mentioned VCB i am assuming you are planning to present ESX LUNs only ?

Hi dynamox,

this seems to be a good idea.

But first of all I have to get all connections back to the backup server....

Yes we only have ESX LUNs.

When I present a LUN to a second Storage Group I get a warning message that it is not recommanded. But I think, that this isn't any problem, because the backup server only reads and does not write to that LUN.

Hi Yasien,

Just to confirm that I am with you, you say after you have deregistered you dont see the deregistered HBA wwns anywhere...??

So they not still registered under the old server?

Are you using Unisphere or Navisphere, if you using Unisphere have you closed it and opened it again...for some operations Unisphere dont seem to refresh properly or maybe its just the connection I am using.

Yes they aren't still registered under the old server and I do not see them to registerm them once again.

I am using Unisphere. I did not yet know from the refresh problem - thanks for that info. I closed it but there is no difference. Even with another browser there is no difference.

Yes I guess the solution of Dynamox is the better way instead of my initial thinking.

I never had any host agend installed on the windows backup server and it worked fine so far. But I alread thought about installing it.
