Creating flexible LUN for Windows Fileshare that supports replication ?
Folks,
Can anyone please give me some clarification for preparing the LUN for the file server that will be used by Windows OS client user (so AD / NTFS permission must be enforced) ?
as I'm building new file server for the company, I am thinking to built new CIFS share LUN on top of the RAID 5 Storage Pool so that I can present it to the Windows XP and 7 users as shared network drive.
From the Storage Server point of view, I'd like to expand it from 1 TB into 2 TB up to 4 TB+ if need be in the next years without causing any downtime or data loss. Plus this file server LUN must be able to be replicated using the EMC Recovery Manager (leveraging SAN copy).
is that solution applicable on the VNX series ?

from storage perspective RAID-5 is a pretty good and safe choice for traditional office shares. Pool LUNs are easily expandable, on the host make sure to format drive as GPT and not MBR so that you can exceed 2TB partition limit.
SAN Copy is traditionally used as a migration tool, not as much are DR replication tool. What is the DR requirement ? Copy data once a day to DR location ?

Thanks for the assistance, so in this case yes, the DR requirement is to perform nightly LUN to LUN copy from one site to another, so I guess the EMC Replication manager should be more than enough

Well, I have got EMC RM license included in the past SAN array upgrade project.
What is RLP ?

yep, Replication Manager is probably an over kill, this is very easily scripted but if you have RM might as well use it. Watch your RLP to make sure you don't run out of space, depends on your change rate.
