did you go through the installation process ? Was it installed by EMC/reseller ?

Sounds like a couple of block-only VNX5200s.  Here is the installation guide.

After you cable and power up the system, you need to use the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Wizard, which is located on support.emc.com.  This tool will assign IPs and a username/password.  The install guide has all of the details.

Again, I apologise for not knowing these things, but what "installation process"?

A shipper dropped off 2 crates, each had a 3-U array, with cables and some docs in blue folders.

Most of the docs are not relevant or contain alternate languages.

There was no "installation" by the vendor, just the crates.

The back-end looks similar to our CX4, so I think I can figure out the cabling, but I have never installed a "new" array before. Always had a prior IP/login to use, but I don't see that anywhere in the docs I have reviewed.

While reviewing the docs and process, it appears the "discovery" process relies upon having the VNX on the network already. How do I get the initial IP addresses assigned so that "discovery" can find that IP?

Im hoping that we are not relying on DHCP, since there is no DHCP server in this environment, everything in production is via static IP.

I guess I don't understand how the initialization routine can "locate" the array, since it won't be on ANY subnet to begin with?

Did you connect the management ports on each SP and the host with the init tool installed to the same network subnet?

Alternatively, you could use a private switch, connect all 3 ports, run the init tool to change IPs, and then cable the array to your network.

That's what im going to try.

I have a old laptop running XP. Im currently installing the 2 SW pacakages (Installer,Unisphere).

I also found an old 5-port hub, ill connect both SPs and the laptop together and manually set the laptop to be the subnet I want to configure the arrays for.

There is no internet connectivity in this setup, im thinking I should make the laptop it's own default router (localhost).

Once I get IP's assigned to the array, the network admin will then allow me to connect to the correct network, and I should then be able to get to it from my desktop system...

make sure you are not running VMware Workstation/VirtualBox on the system that you will use to setup the array, it can confuse the Unisphere init tool. If you do have those apps installed, make sure to disable virtual network adapters.

The system is currently uninitialized, so the Unisphere init tool will scan the subnet and look for arrays that are uninitialized and display its serial number.  From there you can configure IPs and security.  You don't have to worry about DHCP.

The host on which you install the init tool and both SPs must be connected to the same subnet.

Yes, it worked, I found both arrays and ran the initilization routine successfully.
