Start Data Logging throws NULL pointer exception using Unisphere GUI

Hi *,

I try to enable performance logging on VNX5100 using Unisphere but I always get exception: "Start data logging failed: operator->() : Attempt to dereference a NULL pointer".

- statistic logging is enabled

- data logging start fails

I have updated to FLARE 05.32.000.5.006 and I am using a Unisphere standalone management station (current releases).

If I connect directly to SP Unisphere GUI, starting data logging works fine.

Anyone has a clue why data logging does not start using a Unisphere management station?

cheers,

Andy

Hi AWurz,

I can also see that another thread is opened by you https://community.emc.com/thread/147541 for another USM Issue. i doubt these to co-relate and hence would strongly suggest here to you to please contact EMC Support immeduiately to get this resolved.

I think your enviorment needs a webex by a tech support engineer as this your system config needs to checked.

Thanks

Hi Rupal,

the other topic is solved- seems that the EMC download mirrors were not available for that day.

This issue still exists that I can start data logging when directly connecting via Unisphere client to VNX or use VNX onboard Unisphere but start data logging does not work when using Unsiphere Server (management station).

May i know the browser and its version.

I need to check on that first.

Hi Rupal,

I changed default browser to Firefox 12 with no effect- I updated to Firefox 14.2- also no effect.

I also updated Java JRE to 7u5 without solving the issue.

What I also recognized is, that I even cannot retrieve (I do no see any archiveavailable) an archive from the VNX via the Unisphere server with error message, that "data logging is not enabled" (even if i start data login via VNX SP onboard UnisphereGUI).

Might that this could eb a general bug in analyzer when using Unisphere server?

AWurz,

Can I assume that you are bringing up the local Unisphere Server instance on the same host where it is running?  Or in other words, are you launching the Unisphere client or browser on the localhost and using the loopback address to manage the remote VNX (in the local domain)?

If so, try instead from a browser (or Unisphere Client) on a remote host pointing it to your Unisphere Server.  Does this change anything for you?

Hi Christopher,

yes I have client and server on the same host (management station).

I configured server via setup to listen on specific interface IP address- I also address this IP via the local client (not the loopback- cause using loopback you cannot configure local domain when other IP is in server setup).

VNX and server are in local domain and server is domain master.

Starting client from another host connecting to server does not change behavior.

Provisioning works fine- only the sh... perfomance statistics (data logging) wont work.

Thanks for verifying.  Yeah wanted to rule out the loopback which as you stated limits various options specifically the domain settings.  Was thinking maybe you'd get different results from a remote host but not the case.

I'm not expecting it to change anything (feel free to not waste your time), but would be interested to know if instead of launching the Unisphere Client directly, connect to the Unisphere Server locally or from a remote host by launching your browser (instead of the instance via the Unisphere Client) and specifying the IP.  If it by chance works, lets you use the Unisphere Server you setup and its local domain to manage your environment as you originally intended.

using the Unisphere server from (remote) Unisphere client or browser makes no difference- Statistics and enabling data logging only works when directly connecting to VNX enclosure

Thanks AWurz for bearing with me and testing the various combinations.  At this point, unless of course Rupal or others have ideas, since you are running the latest Unisphere Server, I would recommend opening up a ticket with support to review so you can use it in the manner you originally intended.

AWurz,

By chance, have you changed the name of your VNX5100 array (which is of course block only)?  If so, can you rename it back (temporarily) to the default which of course would be the serial number which is also listed in the Properties page.  Then see if that changes anything?

Sorry, I meant to write: "With or without Analyzer enabler, ..."

With or without Analyzer, data logging can be enabled.  Regardless, he mentions:

[...]

This issue still exists that I can start data logging when directly connecting via Unisphere client to VNX or use VNX onboard Unisphere but start data logging does not work when using Unsiphere Server (management station).

[...]

The reason I asked about renaming the array, there is a KB article in draft related to GUI issues when the block portion of the array is renamed after joining it to a domain.  While it doesn't call out his issue specifically, I did think about this when I read the issue.

A very basic Question AWurz, I hope you have Unisphere analyzer installed.

Thanks
