VNX 5700 replication and snapshot performance
Hello,
We have to decide between two offers, VNX 5700 and FAS 3270. We were using Clariion CX-700 three years ago and replaced it with Netapp 3170. Nowadays, we will replace this too.
On clariion days, we have seen very bad performance on snapshot and replication issues. Because of this 'bad history', we have concerns about VNX. It seems, there is still same architecture (I am not sure, just what I see)
On netapp, we did not see any performance problem on snapshot or replication. Everything has worked fine till now. We have an hourly snapshots for a day and daily snapshots for a month which makes restore operations very easy. Replication to DR is not a problem. So, if we choose 3270, we will be going on with this 'proven' storage environment. We are not sure if we will have the same on VNX 5700.
On the other side, VNX has RecoverPoint option. Although we did not test it, it seems it will be enough for block replication. I am not sure if we can replicate "file -CIFS/NFS" side of the VNX.
Just thinking about "snapshot and replication", what do you think about VNX 5700?

On Clariion, if we start replication on business hours, all systems which were connected to clariion (via fc) were waiting for a while to access the storage. For example, we were using Windows 2003 clusters as CIFS server. During replication, clients could not access shares, and they were getting time-out errors. So, our replication policy was based on running replicaiton only evening and night hours.
I think, this problem was related to copy-on-write snapshot mechanism on clariion, and it seems VNX uses same.
I have less knowledge about VNX, so if someone corrects me I will be glad.

VNX does use the same snapshot mechanism, but if it's sized properly (primary storage and RLP) ..you should not be having issues. We had a couple of CX600 and CX700 arrays and honestly old PATA drives were performing horribly. VNX with FAST and FAST Cache is a beast
. All of our vSphere infrastructure deployed on 5700's and VMware guys love it, especially the VAAI , VM clones on DMX3 used to take 20 minutes, now 3 minutes. Can you get a POC box to give it a test ?

i am not doing any bock replication on VNX but we are doing file level replication using Celerra Replicator. It's solid , i can't complain. We have about 60 TB of medical images that are replicating to DR site. Do you have specific issues in mind ?
