I checked the space from both the host and the file system on the VNX. Both reported the same. The sys admin reported to me he had done all the deletes but yet was not seeing the space free up immediately.

where did you check, on the VNX side (server_df) or from the host ?

The export with mounted with all default options. default 0 0
