Vostro 5502 Short Circuit at USB Terminal. External programmable source
Hi guys. So I might have blown a fuse on my laptop, the Dell Vostro 5502. I work in condition monitoring and I had a project to do which required that I connect the laptop to a external source via USB RS485 WE, for data transfer and analysis. The external source was still live when I was making adjustments to it to get a proper set up. A short circuit occurred as the power cable (24V DC) made contact with one of the data cables and the laptop just went off. No life at all. What can I do?

Unplug the system, disconnect the battery from the system board and hold the power button for 30 sec.
Reconnect the battery and try powering up again -- there is some high voltage protection inside, and that may save the system.
If not, the mainboard will need to be replaced. A very good idea is to install some kind of a fuse or circuit breaker between the device and the system to prevent the problem from happening again, but it has to be external -- there are no internal fuses that could possibly protect all the low voltage circuits inside the system (and there are many of these, powering the CPU, RAM and other components).

So I managed to get the problem resolved. I had to change out the motherboard with CPU and all... It had gotten damaged as a result of the short-circuit.

Buy a new laptop, and make sure you don't do the same thing again.
