I wonder if anyone can help me with another problem! Yes I know another one! When I was trying to install the update on AVG I took some advise as it wouldn't let me install it. I went, somehow, onto the permissions section and tried to change mine. I now find that macromedia flash and shockwave player will not work on my login - they will on my husbands login. I think, well actually I know, I must have messed something up. I know there's a way when you start up your machine to go back an reset your setting to previous date would this work for my problem and if so how do I do it and on another programme it says 'could not create registry key'. I think the 2 are related but I'm not sure. You are all so fantastic on here I'm sure someone will have some words of wisdom for somebody who should know better than to mess around with something they don't have a clue about
What you're asking for is called System Restore which can undo changes like that. The problem is, if you go back to a date before you made the modification to update AVG, the AVG update will be removed and you may be back to the same AVG problem you had before. All microsoft updates originally installed after the date used for the restore will also have to be reinstalled.
Perhaps somebody else will have an idea about giving your account access to flash and shockwave again without doing the System Restore. But if you really want to do the System Restore:
click start>help&support
click "Undo changes..."
follow prompts
Pick latest date available before you changed the registry. Once that's done, immediately reinstall all required MS updates again, including this week's critical security patch.
Thank you for that. I tried to restore it but it wont let me. Granted, I am trying for January but I didn't think that would make any difference. It goes through the motions but then tells me its done nothing!
Sounds like you have a bunch of problems here.
Start by running windows system file check:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click OK
Insert XP CD if sfc requests it and reboot when it's done.
You may have to delete your user profile and create a new one, then take ownership of your doc files etc in that new profile. Click start>help&support and search for "ownership" (without the quotes) to find instructions on taking ownership to the files in the new profile.
Fix System Restore by turning it off in System control panel; reboot; turn it back on; reboot; manually create a restore point; reboot and use the new restore point to restore the system. Do this after you fix your user profile problems.
