I did the following without problems. Open .pdf file in Adobe Acrobat reader (v 6.0.1, 3/11/2003): found a chart; click snapshot viewer in the toolbar, dragged selection around the chart. On releasing the mouse, got message 'the selected area has been copied to the clipboard'. Opened Word (2002 SP3), clicked paste, the selected chart pasted into Word as a picture. This works for any part of the pdf page. Using text copies the text within the selected area, as you say, which can then be edited in Word. In the case of a table in the pdf, for example, you can convert the text back to a table in Word, so you can edit it as well. If you use snapshot of a table, you get a picture in Word and can't edit it..
So for me it all seems to work as expected.
Have you checked Adobe Acrobat for update? I seem to remember there was a patch.
PS the message 'selected area copied to clipboard' will not appear if on a previous occasion you checked the do not show this again box on it.
