Automatic Updates

Hello,

I always used to use automatic updates to install new critical updates although a month or so back had a problem whereby it was always coming up with the same update to install (apparently a common problem at the time).  I therefore turned this feature off.

I now wish to turn automatic updates back on again and have gone into control panel / system / automatic updates to do so.  The section is all greyed out though and does not let me switch the auto updates back on.

Is there a reason why this would be so?

How can I switch automatic updates on again?

Any help would be appreciated

You should be able to turn it on by checking the box near the top of the page labeled "Keep my computer up to date...."

if you cannot check the box there at start/control panel/system/automatic updates, where it says "keep my computer up-to-date", try going to "services" in "administrative tools", find "automatic updates", doubleclick the "automatic updates" service, and see if it is set to "disabled", and, if so, try changing the setting to "automatic" (startup).

More info from MS on auto update:

My own opinion on this is to let someone else be the guinea pig on any update for a few weeks and then check the forum boards for any problems incurred. Easier than to try and fix it later.
