box with red x

Question

Lately I have been getting a box with a red x in it when I veiw certain web pages .( and even some at Dells site) It is not only pictures that get a red x but also icons . I did a search too look for an answer but to no avail. I do have ' show pictures' checked in Internet options / Advanced tab . I also have 'Show Image Place Holders' unchecked. On some web pages I can right click it (box wih red x) and then select ' Show Pictures' and it will show a picture , others it won't work .    I am using IE 6 . I am running XP with SP 2 .  Can anybody suggest a fix ? The only new program I have on my computer Is the new Dell Support 3 Program which Dell put on about 5 weeks ago. Other then that I can't think of anything else besides windows updates    Thanks   Malron

Right-click the red-x and then click Properties in the dialog box that appears. If the resulting box shows 'bug.cgi' at the top, Show Picture will not apply.   If you're using EZ Firewall or, perhaps, ZoneAlarm you might find the following informative:   'If you are getting red x's most likely your Privacy settings are blocking the image. The Privacy advisor can help resolve the issue and allow you to customise a site or even your 'global' settings. You will need to go to the Privacy Panel and click on 'custom' in Cookie Control. Then go to the bottom and enable 'Show Privacy Advisor' click apply then ok. Next go to a page in question and when the Privacy Advisor alert pops up, click on 'Click here for details'' and it should take you to the Site List box where you will see the entry causing the problem. The name of the entry can be found in the 'Entry Detail' box at the bottom of the page. Now click on 'options' and turn off the ones that interfer with the page. You may have to try several and then refresh the page until the issue is resolved. This will allow you to customize a page or know what 'global' setting to allow.'   It appears these red-x's are Web Bugs placed by the Website as tracking devices. I have Windows XP Home and use EZ Firewall which disables these Web Bugs. I can re-set the site(s) to 'enable', thus resulting in the red-x's disappearing. While a bit of a nuisance, I opted to keep the red-x's, therefore disabling the Web Bugs.

Thank you for the info , Sorry I could not thank you sooner but I got tied up . I took a look at  the link you posted, and tried a couple things that seemed to pertain to my computer . So far so good . I have not had a box with a red x on any pages I looked at so, again thank you aps@ sun.    I do not have Zone Alarm. I have Norton antivirus 2004. I use the regular fire wall that comes with SP 2 . I went threw and looked at my settings I changed a couple with the Norton Internet Security. Thanks for the Info. Malron, are you accessing the Internet from work?  I get a lot of red Xs when I do that but it is because my company blocks most web sites except for Dell, Microsoft and a few others. The red Xs are links to photos being hosted on unauthorized web sites.
