Can't load SP2 no newdev.dll

When trying to update Windows XP with service pack 2 I get the error it can’t find the file newdev.dll in C:\windows\system32.  When I search for the file it is found in that folder.  What should I do?  It also says something about using my XP disk which I do have from Dell.

Run this command from Start/Run:

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\newdev.dll

Post back what the popup says after entering the command. If this doesn't work you could run this command which is what you probably already saw:

sfc /scannow (note space after the "c")

The pop up  error says: c:\windows\system32\newdev.dll was loaded but the dll register server entry point was not found.  This file can not be registered.

After running sfc scannow it asked me to put in my XP disk and did I want to reload xp or run other tasks and a few other things.  Any idea on what I should do now!

Thanks for your help!!!!!!

Sorry, I should have tried it on my machine first; I get the same message. It may be corrupt in which case the SFC should fix it.

If you hold down the Shift key when you put the cd in the scan should run.

Having said all that I believe your install hangup on that specific file may have been caused not by the file it self but that you didn't first disconnect all your peripherals, including a USB mouse if applicable to your system. As well, run an updated scan of AdAware and an online anti-virus scan at housecall.trendmicro.com before the install.

Maxd,

Thanks for your help!   I ran the scf scan and held the shift key down when I put in the cd and that fixed my problem.  I loaded SP2 with no more problems!  Thanks a lot for your help!
