Changing display background - too many images

Dell Dimension 8200, Windows XP Home SP2

From Display/Desktop Properties/Background. The Background selection contains all the files in My Pictures were as, it used to show only files contained in the Wallpaper folder. The wallpaper files are buried in there but because of the large numbers of files in My Pictures they sre difficult to navigate.

The Windows/Web/Wallpaper folder contains only the original background files.

Much obliged

Hello :smileyhappy:

So you want to remove some of these images and make the list shorter?

Go to
C:\Windows.  Scroll down and look under the "Type" column for
Bitmap Image
Jpeg Image.

Deleting them here should remove them from the list, but just check that there is still a copy in "My Pictures" before deleting anything.  There should be, but better to be sure.

Hello Duneden and thank you for your reply.

It seems that once you go into the Display Properties/Backgrond Tab and click Browse to select a from My Pictures, all files in My Pictures will apprear in the background tab list and can't be removed unless the files are removed ed from the My Pictures folder

For the Display Properties Background tab, Windows XP fetches the image files from following locations:

%systemroot%\Web\Wallpaper
%Userprofile%\My Documents\My Pictures (& Sub folders)
%AppData%\Microsoft\internet Explorer
%%Program Files%\Plus!\tHemes (& Sub folders)

The only way around this is to remove the files from My Pictures - a bit drastic - or move the files to another folder and call it something else. - once the browse button has been pressed, the background tab will always point to My Pictures.

So think I will just put up with it Hi!

Regards  Bill

Thanks for posting that Bill.

I have never used the "Browse" option so did not know it works in that way.

I usually just select a picture from "My Pictures" and set it as Desktop Background.
This is an easier way to find the picture you want if you have thumbnails enabled.:smileyhappy:
