corrupted computer

awhile ago, my computer froze while i was opening a webpage. I restarted, and when the computer came back on there was nothing on the screen. Just the wallpaper--no icons. When I do "control-alt-delete" it brings up the task manager, and I can open most of my programs/files from there.
I'm sure that something is corrupted, but I'm not advanced enough (and don't trust myself enough), to just start trying to fix it by myself.
Any ideas on how to restore my desktop?
Thanks!

My wifes laptop has same problem.  I had to start comp up in safe mode so I could do a system restore from a previous date.  Once I did that everything came back up, but I am getting a RUNDLL loading error.  So one problem fixed and another to figure out.  I am trying to do a operating system repair from the CD.  Not quiet sure on how to get the system to boot from the CD so that I may get that going.

If you can open IE then go here for an online scan. It takes quite a while but thorough:

punknhead,

If your wife's laptop is Inspiron, go http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_winxp&message.id=186149 for instructions on how to setup the computer to boot from the CD.

Go http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for instructions on how to do Repair Install.

manIT,

Open the Task Manager, File, New Task (Run), type explore

I tried typing explore, and it said: "windows cannot find explore. make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

Thanks all for the input, unfortunately after going through the repair, I am still getting the message:

error loading DOCEOC16B1 the specified module could not be found.

maybe its not a windows error?

If you haven't resolved your problem yet, see this, and this
