dat file viewer

Question

I not to long ago did a OS reinstall of XP MCE and before I did it i used the file and transfer wizard to save files and settings to a second drive in my system   The install went well and i think that i brought in all the files and settings but i am not 100% sure as a folder with files are missing.. so now on the spare drive  I have 8 img0000X.dat(X =1-8) files. Does anyone know of a view that can be used to look at the contents of these files?   thanks

These .dat files are files created by the Windows XP file and settings transfer wizard. You may be able to view their contents with a text editor or a hex editor. However, I suspect that the information in them will be barely readable at best. The information in these files is compressed to speed the transfer of files and settings.

Other programs use the .dat file extension for their own file data types. These include IE and Netscape Navigator temporary internet cache files, Clarion database files, DataFlex database files and Microsoft Windows for registry files (system.dat and user.dat)

The use of the .dat file extension is not exclusive to the Windows XP File and Settings Transfer Wizard.

Thanks for the reply I had pretty much come to the conclusio that these files are unviewable myself but was just putting out a feeler to see if i had missed something .. Since these files are rather large..around 2gig a piece most text viewers i didnt feel would be able to access them.. Guess i will just erase them and get the drive ready for a install of Vista to dual boot..now that will fun.....
