Defragment has Stop Working
Hi I have a Dell Dimension XPS B800 and it is running win98 SE. My problem is that for some reason when I go to defrag my drive, the window comes up and I tell it to start. Well it dont actually start at all. What it does is just sit there, and the little things that are suppose to fly in the air, dont do anything.
So after lets say 5 minutes of just waiting, I go to cancel it out, and the computer does nothing at all. So I go to ctrl/alt/delete and comes up with the blue screen of death, saying that the system could be busy, or it is unstable, and press any key to return to windows. It returns to nothing, and then I hit the ctrl/alt/delete again and again, and it just goes back and forth like this.
Finally I have to press restart for the computer to re boot. The rest of the system works fine, including error checking which comes up with no problems.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's possible that your defrag program is corrupted. To replace it go to Start|Run, enter SFC and click OK. Tell System File Checker to replace one file (defrag.exe) from the installation disk (your Windows 98 reinstallation CD) and install it in C:\Windows. Point the extraction program at the Win98 folder on the CD. See if that corrects the behavior.

Although you do not mention any errors, follow the procedure in the link below and see if it resolves the issue:

If the above don't help, you can give this a try. Get the WinMe defrag from here and see if it works:

Dan thanks for the reply, I tried what you said and that did not work either. It just stops at 10% and after that the whole system locks up. I am left to just press the restart button. Maybe I am going to try the rest of the suggestions and see what happens.

Hey Dean (gridertime) it worked. The defrag worked perfect. But after that I went back and redid the setttins in the selective startup because it changed screen resolution and some different things. So since it worked like you told me, do I have to do that all the time in order to defrag?
anyway thank you for the help.

Joe, I didn't have the resolution and other problems you had. When I went back to Selctive Start I made sure that what I unchecked, was checked; Not just click Normal, before I restarted.
This problem(defraging) just started on me recently. The only things I know that are different, is now I have Broadband, AOL 9.0SE, Aol's/mcaffee virus scan, Aol/mcaffee firewall, and aol's spyzapper. I had tried to turn them all off, but it still didn't work.
Do you have a new virus scan of somekind? It mentions it in Microsoft link I sent you.
Currently that is the only way I'm able to defrag. I had to turn it off my tasks. If I come up with another way, I'll let you know.
